FRANKLIN COUNTY, VERMONT — A homeowner, Gordon Richard Sr., reportedly shot and critically injured Paul E. Brown, 39, during an attempted break-in late Tuesday night. According to Vermont State Police, Brown, along with two other men, allegedly tried to force their way into Richard’s home on Sand Hill Road, specifically targeting the area where Richard’s son, Matthew, 40, resided.
The incident occurred just after 11:30 p.m., when Richard confronted the intruders. He used a muzzleloader rifle to shoot Brown and then secured his home before alerting the authorities. Police discovered Brown in a neighboring yard, while his accomplices had escaped.
Brown received immediate medical attention, initially at Northwestern Medical Center and subsequently at University of Vermont Medical Center. As of Wednesday afternoon, he was in critical condition.
The police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident. They executed a search warrant at Richard’s residence, conducted interviews, and followed various leads.
Richard has been cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
