On April 15, 1952, 74 years ago, the B-52 Stratofortress took its first flight. Three years later, it entered active service.
Originally designed for high-altitude nuclear bombing missions over the Soviet Union, the B-52 would never serve its original purpose.

It did, however, serve its secondary role of delivering high amounts of conventional munitions.
Entering service in the 1950s, no other aircraft, aside from the Soviet Tu-95, has served nearly as long as the B-52 has.
With plans to extend the aircraft’s life even further, the bomber is expected to have a full service life of at least 100 years, making it one of the longest-serving aircraft in history.

Designing the B-52
Almost immediately after the end of the Second World War, the U.S. was looking for its next intercontinental strategic bomber.
Boeing was approached to design the bomber that would eventually become the B-52.
Initially, the aircraft went through a rough, delayed development cycle.
None of Boeing’s proposed designs impressed the Military. Some of the initial designs featured a straight wing and six turboprop engines.
However, these designs did not meet the weight and speed requirements the U.S. Air Materiel Command (AMC) sought.
The B-52 was designed at a crucial transitional period in aviation history. Jet engines were emerging as a promising technology, with many experimental ideas being tossed around.
The program was briefly paused to let Boeing get its bearings and perfect the design.
Fearing the technology of the time wouldn’t meet the military’s demands, Boeing designed the aircraft to be future-proof and easily upgradable.
After a series of rejected proposals, Boeing finally settled on a satisfactory design for the new bomber. To meet the range demands, the aircraft was enlarged to provide more internal fuel space.
Its wings were swept back 35 degrees, with each wing carrying two sets of two jet engines.
Although the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) was initially skeptical of the jet engine configuration due to fears of excessive fuel consumption, the military reluctantly approved the design for further testing. Testing ran from 1949 to 1952, when the aircraft officially entered service.
America’s Long-serving Strategic Bomber
When the B-52 first entered service, no one could have guessed how long it would remain in service.
Today, the B-52 is highly regarded, but at the time, the BUFF was considered a problem child to the USAF.
Originally plagued by mechanical and technical issues, the bombers were too big and heavy for the bases they operated from and frequently caused wear and tear on their airstrips.
The aircraft also suffered from constant fuel leaks, and its targeting computers and avionics were initially unreliable.
With the introduction of later variants, however, many of these early problems were subsequently resolved.
The bomber was originally operated by the U.S. Strategic Air Command (STRATCOM) but was later assigned to Air Force units as the bomber assumed a more conventional role.
The B-52 was originally designed to drop free-fall nuclear bombs over Soviet territory.
However, as surface-to-air missile technology improved, it became abundantly clear that this strategy was not going to fly.

The B-52’s mission was later changed to a low-altitude penetrator role, evading radar by flying closer to the ground.
Later in the Cold War, as air defenses and interceptor aircraft improved, this strategy was also deemed impractical.
For a time, the B-52’s role in the Air Force was called into question, especially after 31 bombers were lost during the Vietnam War.
However, the aircraft was saved by the development of air-launched stand-off missiles.
With the introduction of missiles like the AGM-86 ALCM, the B-52 could launch large volumes of cruise missiles outside enemy airspace without putting the crew or the aircraft in harm’s way.
With modifications made to its bomb bays, the bomber would become the Air Force’s premier missile carrier.
Why the B-52 is So Hard to Replace
A large part of the B-52’s longevity is due to the simplicity and versatility of its design.
It was built with the expectation that jet engines and avionics would improve, so it was designed to support future upgrades.
Over time, the aircraft’s engines and avionics have been replaced and improved, allowing it to remain relevant more than 70 years after its introduction.
The B-52 is the perfect encapsulation of the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
For a subsonic intercontinental strategic bomber, there arguably isn’t a better design.
The aircraft’s only limitations are its current avionics and aging airframes.
Today, the Air Force plans to keep the B-52 in service until the 2050s, meaning that the B-52 will have remained in service for roughly 100 years.
The ongoing B-52J program seeks to increase the bomber’s service life by replacing the current Pratt and Whitney TF33 engines with more fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce F130 turbofan engines.
The program also seeks to modernize the B-52’s avionics and navigation systems to bring the aged bomber more in line with modern standards.
This will keep the aircraft relevant for decades to come.
What will happen when the B-52 finally reaches its 100-year service milestone? Who knows. Either way, the BUFF has already made its mark on Air Force and aviation history.
