How Navy SEAL John Allen Became a Storyteller

The grenade bounced off John Allen’s shoulder and exploded nearby during a firefight in Afghanistan. Allen, a Navy SEAL, was badly wounded. He survived the 2014 blast and was medically retired from the SEAL teams in 2017.

Now, his audience knows him as MrBallen. He entertains millions with stories that are interesting and dark in nature. Wearing a flannel shirt and a backward cap for most of the videos, his opening promise is that the stories told on the channel are “strange, dark, and mysterious.”

While an unusual turn for a former SEAL, it also grew out of a skill he had long before the camera lights flashed on.

A Storyteller In The SEAL Teams

Allen enlisted in the Navy in 2010 and joined SEAL Team 2 in 2012. He deployed to Afghanistan and Peru. In an interview with the American Veterans Center, Allen traced his love of stories back even further: During boot camp, when he could not keep books with him, his mother mailed him pages torn from Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, one chapter at a time.

The gift that he really grew in the teams earned him the moniker “Shakespeare” from his peers, as early as his basic training. He had a combat injury and medical retirement, which pointed him in this direction.

After struggling to find a career for a while when he exited the military, MrBallen worked in fundraising for a while before he found his true passion: storytelling.

That experiment took off on Feb. 29, 2020. Allen posted a one-minute TikTok video about the mysterious deaths of nine hikers at Dyatlov Pass. He then went to a water park with his wife and daughters.

When he checked his phone that evening, the video had drawn 5 million views in four hours, according to his foundation. This viral and sudden response showed there was an audience for the stories he preferred to tell.

He began building what would become the MrBallen channel, centered on true crime, mysteries and other “strange, dark and mysterious” stories. His voice and pacing, combined with attention to detail, draw viewers through these stories in an informative way.

A Career Made Of Stories

Allen’s YouTube audience grew to more than 6 million subscribers, according to his foundation. The work expanded into the “MrBallen Podcast: Strange, Dark & Mysterious Stories” and Ballen Studios, a company producing stories across audio and other formats.

It also reached bookstores. His first illustrated collection, “MrBallen Presents: Strange, Dark & Mysterious,” was published in 2024. A second collection, “Where Nightmares Live,” followed in 2025. Both collections of stories are based on real events.

John Allen, who later became known as storyteller MrBallen, is pictured during his service as a Navy SEAL. He was wounded by a grenade blast in Afghanistan in 2014.

His rise was striking, but the appeal of the former SEAL is easy to see. He generally speaks straight with his audiences and doesn’t talk down in any way.

The attention to detail and enthusiasm he brings to the stories helps the audience to envision how the stories actually went down, and details matter. A troubling detail raises questions, and the next detail is even more important.

MrBallen is an expert in this form of entertainment, and viewers do not need to know anything about Navy SEALs to follow along with any of the stories on his channel.

Viewers are also enlightened to stories that may hit a little closer to home, and MrBallen is quite aware of these problems. As a storyteller, how does he show the people whose worst days are now an episode of his popular channel?

The Faces Behind The Tales

Allen has acknowledged that tension. “These are events that happened to real people and real families,” he says on the MrBallen Foundation’s website. He says he tries to tell a story from a victim’s perspective, aware that loved ones may hear it.

In 2022, he also founded a nonprofit organization to support the victims of violence, and their families were also beneficiaries. The agency is a source of funding and works with other organizations that help survivors live a better life. According to the foundation, this all came about from his viewers who wanted to help the victims in the stories he tells.

That work gives Allen’s unlikely career another connection to his years in uniform. After surviving a grenade blast, he did not set out to become known for recounting other people’s terrifying experiences. He started by telling one story online and discovered that millions wanted to hear the next one.

The challenge that he faces is coming up with more and more entertaining stories, and it seems like MrBallen never settles. His audience is always in suspense, and every time he tells a story, he remembers the names behind the faces.

That talent is unique, and he has been using it for not only the benefit of his generation, but also those who are intimately connected to the harrowing tales of yesteryear.
