Fresno Homeowner Shoots Hammer-Wielding Man Who Smashed Windows and Threatened to Kill Family

FRESNO, CA — A Fresno homeowner shot a man attempting to break into his home after the suspect smashed vehicle windows with a hammer and threatened to kill the family inside, according to police. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. Friday evening near Hoxie and Whitney Avenues.

Authorities say 48-year-old Baldemar Lugo arrived at the residence and began destroying the family’s vehicle windows with a hammer. Lugo then turned his attention to the home, pounding on the front door and demanding that the family come outside so he could kill them.

Fearing for the safety of his family, the homeowner armed himself with a handgun and fired a round through the door as Lugo tried to force his way inside. Lugo was hit and fled the scene before being detained by police.

Lugo has been arrested and charged with making criminal threats, vandalism, and attempted assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators are still determining a motive as the family stated they did not know him.

The investigation is ongoing.

In this case, the homeowner took action to protect his family from an armed individual making violent threats and trying to break into their home. While this decision likely prevented further harm, it’s important to understand the potential risks of shooting through a door. One major concern is the legal ambiguity of whether the threat is truly imminent if the person has not yet breached the door. Until they are inside, it may be difficult to clearly articulate that they pose an immediate danger, even if they are making threats.

Additionally, shooting through a door creates significant risks because you are essentially firing blindly without a clear visual of the target. If you miss, the bullet could strike an innocent person, such as a neighbor or passerby. While defending yourself is a priority, it’s crucial to carefully consider the legal and practical implications of any defensive action, especially in situations where the threat is not fully visible. Always be sure to weigh all options, including securing the home and contacting authorities, before resorting to deadly force.
