Flying with Guns Episode 27: LAS to MSY

Flying with Guns Episode 27: LAS to MSY

For Episode 27 of Flying with Guns, I flew from Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) on Southwest Airlines, and this one was about as smooth as it gets.

I was traveling with my firearm secured in a Pelican 1507 case inside a larger roller luggage. When I walked up to the Southwest counter in Las Vegas, I said what I usually say: “I’m declaring firearms.” The agent didn’t miss a beat and got right to it. He filled out the declaration card, confirmed there was no loose ammunition, had me sign the form, and handled everything quickly and professionally.

It was one of the fastest check-ins I’ve had in a while—no confusion, no delays, just clean and efficient. After checking the bag, I waited the usual 15 minutes by the designated area in case TSA needed to contact me. They didn’t.

When I landed in New Orleans, my bag came out quickly on the carousel with the rest of the luggage. No special handling, no calls, no waiting around. Just smooth from start to finish.

Key Takeaways

  • Confident airline agents make a big difference. When they know the process, everything moves fast.
  • Using a secure case inside a larger bag keeps things both compliant and discreet.
  • Always build in buffer time. That 15-minute wait after check-in is standard in case TSA needs you.

This flight was a textbook example of how flying with firearms should work: clear communication, proper procedure, and zero drama. If you’re new to this process, check out our full Flying with Guns Guide before your next trip.
