MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA (3-minute read) — Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell was tragically killed this week by Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, a 35-year-old convicted felon barred from owning firearms. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Mohamed, who died from multiple gunshot wounds on Thursday night outside an apartment complex on Blaisdell Avenue South.

While the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has not officially named Mohamed as the shooter, police confirmed that the suspect, who ambushed and killed Officer Jamal Mitchell, died at the scene. Multiple law enforcement sources corroborated Mohamed’s involvement in the shooting.

Mohamed’s criminal history dates back to a 2008 felony burglary conviction. Court records also reveal he had an active warrant for his arrest and was convicted in 2016 on federal charges for possessing ammunition as a felon.

The incident began just after 5 p.m. on Thursday on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue South. Inside an apartment complex, two individuals were shot; 32-year-old Osman Said Jamale succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, while another victim sustained injuries. A third individual was also wounded outside the building.

As officers responded to the shootings, Officer Jamal Mitchell attempted to assist a potential victim and was subsequently ambushed.

The tragic event also resulted in injuries to another officer and a firefighter, both of whom have since been discharged from the hospital.
