Barbershop Owner Pistol-Whipped, Shoots Armed Robber Who Tried to Restrain Victims with Zip Ties

SAN ANTONIO, TX — A barbershop owner acted in self-defense when he shot and killed an armed robber who was threatening lives inside the business, according to authorities.

The incident took place around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at a barbershop located in the 2000 block of Basse Road. Police say 50-year-old Victor Cardenas entered the shop brandishing a firearm and demanded wallets and purses from those inside.

When one of the business owners, a 26-year-old man, did not immediately comply, Cardenas pistol-whipped him. The suspect then turned his attention to a 51-year-old female business owner, pulling out zip ties—suggesting an intent to restrain those inside.

At that moment, the male business owner retrieved his own firearm and shot Cardenas multiple times in the chest. The suspect was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but was later pronounced dead. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide.

San Antonio police confirmed that the business owner acted lawfully in self-defense and is not expected to face charges.

Self-Defense and the Importance of Readiness

This incident highlights the importance of being armed and prepared when faced with a violent threat. The suspect’s use of force—pistol-whipping a victim and attempting to tie up others—posed a clear danger to everyone in the barbershop. The business owner’s ability to quickly access and use his firearm likely prevented further harm.

Carrying a firearm for self-defense comes with responsibility, including ongoing training and an understanding of state laws regarding the use of force. Situational awareness and readiness can make all the difference in a life-threatening scenario.
