JASPER, GA – A shooting inside a North Georgia VA clinic led to a deadly encounter involving police and an armed civilian on March 17, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Authorities say Nicholas “Nic” Crews, 34, of Marietta, was working as a social work case manager at the Pickens VA Clinic when he was shot by 51-year-old Lawrence Charles Michels of Jasper. Michels had reportedly entered the clinic for a walk-in mental health consultation. The shooting occurred around 1:30 p.m. inside the facility.

Crews was critically injured and transported by air to a trauma hospital. Despite medical efforts, he died the following day on March 18.

After the initial shooting, investigators say Michels exited the building while still armed with a handgun. Outside, he encountered responding law enforcement officers along with an armed civilian already on scene.

According to the GBI, an exchange of gunfire followed involving Michels, police officers, and the armed citizen. Michels was struck during the exchange and pronounced dead at the scene. The armed citizen and law enforcement officers were not injured.

The case remains under active investigation.

More from USA Carry:

With all the the defensive gun use incidents I cover, it is rare that you’ll see one where an armed citizen is engaging the threat along side of the police. It makes me curious for more details about what took place once Michels exited the building.

With all the defensive gun use incidents I cover, it is rare to see one where an armed citizen is engaging the threat alongside responding police. That detail stands out. It raises questions about how the situation unfolded once Michels exited the building and how both the citizen and officers responded in those moments.

Situations like this are a reminder of how quickly events can evolve and how complex they can become when multiple armed parties are involved. For those who carry, it highlights the importance of awareness, decision-making, and recognizing what is happening around you in real time.

At its core, this incident reflects the reality that the right to defend against an immediate threat of death or serious bodily harm is fundamental. It also shows that these situations are rarely simple and often unfold in ways that are difficult to predict.
