Hunting Matters Podcast Features Wildlife Biologist and Conservation Storyteller Joe Richards

(HOUSTON, TX – August 4, 2026) Houston Safari Club Foundation (HSCF) welcomes wildlife biologist, photographer, writer, and conservation outreach specialist Joe Richards for an engaging conversation exploring the intersection of wildlife science, conservation storytelling, water resources, and the future of America’s outdoor heritage. This episode highlights Richards’ unique journey from a young outdoor enthusiast to a wildlife professional dedicated to connecting people, science, and conservation.

Richards graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences and a double major in Entomology before earning a master’s degree in Wildlife, Aquatic and Wildlands Science and Management from Texas Tech University in 2025. Throughout his career, he has gained hands-on experience through seasonal wildlife research positions focused on species including bobwhite quail, elk, and wild turkeys across Texas, Colorado, and Oklahoma.

A passionate photographer and storyteller, Richards uses his camera and writing to communicate the importance of wildlife research, habitat conservation, natural resource management, and the outdoor traditions that connect people to the land.

In the episode, Richards discusses how his early experiences outdoors shaped his career path, the lessons he learned from working across diverse ecosystems, and why storytelling is such an important tool in conservation.

Richards currently serves as an Outreach Specialist with Playa Lakes Joint Venture, where he works with landowners, communities, and conservation partners to support habitat restoration and sustainable water management throughout the Great Plains region. Through partnership-driven conservation, he helps communities protect natural resources while maintaining working landscapes for future generations.

The episode also highlights Richards’ commitment to service. He is an Eagle Scout, a former education docent at the San Antonio Zoo, and an active volunteer with the state chapter of The Wildlife Society. His dedication to education and outreach reflects a lifelong commitment to helping others understand and appreciate wildlife.

Listeners will also hear Richards share his favorite wildlife photography experiences, the species he would pursue with unlimited time and resources, and advice for young people interested in careers in conservation.
