Chestnut Hill – Build It Right From the Ground Up: Fall Site Selection & Prep Guide

Alachua, FL (July 14, 2026) – Fall planting success starts long before trees arrive at the property. Proper site selection and land preparation can improve tree survival, promote healthy growth, and maximize future mast production.

One of the most important factors in establishing a successful mast orchard is choosing the right location. As the old real estate saying goes, “location, location, location,” the site selected for planting often determines long-term success. By evaluating a property’s terrain, soil conditions, and available sunlight, landowners can create an environment where trees thrive for years to come.

When evaluating a planting site, Chestnut Hill Outdoors recommends considering four key factors: slope, aspect, soil moisture, and sunlight exposure. Most mast-producing trees perform best on relatively flat, well-drained ground that receives full sunlight throughout the day. Understanding these site characteristics before planting can help avoid future issues and improve overall productivity.

Landowners should also pay attention to microclimates across their property. South-facing slopes generally receive more sunlight and tend to be warmer and drier, while low-lying areas and north-facing slopes may retain moisture and experience colder temperatures. These subtle differences can influence growth rates, flowering, and mast production over time.

Beyond growing conditions, site selection should consider how new plantings fit within the larger habitat. Positioning mast orchards near food plots, bedding areas, or established travel corridors can increase wildlife use. Combining hard-mast trees with soft-mast shrubs can also create valuable edge habitat that provides both food and cover for deer, turkey, and other wildlife species.

Once a suitable location has been identified, site preparation becomes the next priority. Depending on existing conditions, landowners may need to remove competing vegetation, improve sunlight penetration through selective clearing, adjust soil pH, or mow and spray areas to reduce competition for moisture and nutrients. Completing these tasks before planting can give young trees a stronger start and improve establishment rates.

Successful planting projects often come down to preparation and planning. Taking time to evaluate the property, understand site conditions, and prepare the ground before planting season arrives can help ensure healthier trees and more productive mast orchards in the years ahead.
