Armed 14-Year-Old Suspect and Intended Victim Shot During Botched Robbery in Missouri

ST. LOUIS, MO — A 14-year-old male was shot and injured after he and another suspect allegedly attempted to rob two men at gunpoint in downtown St. Louis on Tuesday evening.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officers from District 4 responded to reports of a shooting in the 800 block of North 9th Street just before 7 p.m. The preliminary investigation suggests the teen suspect and an accomplice approached a 45-year-old man and another individual with the intent to rob them at gunpoint.

The 45-year-old victim, who was legally armed, reportedly drew his firearm and ordered the 14-year-old to drop his weapon. Gunfire was exchanged between the two, resulting in both the teen and the 45-year-old sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. The second suspect fled the scene and has not yet been apprehended.

The police department’s Crime Laboratory was observed processing the scene, with officers collecting evidence and photographing the area.

No further details about charges or the identity of the suspects have been released at this time.

In incidents like this, hesitation can be costly. When facing an armed threat, especially with a gun already drawn on you, any delay can shift the advantage further toward the aggressor. While the 45-year-old’s attempt to de-escalate may have been commendable, the exchange of gunfire that followed underscores the dangers of drawing under direct threat. Situational awareness and decisive action are key components of responsible armed self-defense.
