First Shots: Ruger 5.7×28 mm Firearms

First Shots: Ruger 5.7×28 mm Firearms

Earlier this year, we had a chance to attend 5.7 Fest at Range Ready in Robert, LA, the home of the good folks at Gun Talk. It was a celebration of the 5.7×28 mm round, with numerous firearm and ammunition manufacturers present, along with various accessories like suppressors and optics. One of the firearm manufacturers at the event was Ruger, which is fitting since the company’s Ruger-5.7 pistol pretty much jump-started interest in the round.

In addition to the Ruger-5.7 pistol, though, we had hands-on time with the LC Carbine and the LC Charger large-format pistol in 5.7 mm. With the LC Carbine, one of the challenges attendees were given was to achieve the most accurate group at 50 yards in the shortest time period possible. The winner (not your author here) only missed the center of a bullseye target once out of 10 shots, and did that in significantly less than one minute. The accuracy of Ruger’s handy carbine, combined with stellar ammunition, made the competition fierce—the next two competitors achieved the same accuracy standard in times that were only a few seconds slower.

The LC Charger in 5.7 mm proved itself outstanding as well, with plate-rack performance at 50 yards nothing short of spectacular. The velocity of the 5.7×28 mm round, especially out of the longer barrel afforded by the large-format pistol (10.3 inches), meant that plates dropped with authority, and the minimal felt recoil allowed either cheekweld or single-point-sling shooting to yield easy hits on target. The advantages of the 5.7 mm round out of a large-format pistol were abundantly clear with plate after plate falling.

Paul Pluff from Ruger joins us for a quick chat about the many offerings from Ruger in 5.7 mm. For more information on any of the firearms in this video, and other firearms available from ruger, visit ruger.com.
