What a 57-Year-Low in Jobless Claims Is Telling Us

Welcome to the Golden Era

Initial jobless claims just did something they haven’t done since 1969.

New filings for unemployment benefits dropped to 187,000 for the week ending July 18 — a nearly 57-year low, and a much bigger drop than economists expected.

Wall Street spend time debating whether this is “good” or “bad” news for the Fed. I think both sides are missing the real story.

This isn’t a cyclical blip. It’s demographics finally showing up in the data.

Birth rates across the developed world — the U.S., Europe, Japan, China, South Korea — have been falling for decades, and the workforce math is now catching up.

Fewer young workers are entering the labor force every year than are retiring out of it. That’s not a recession signal. It’s a structural worker shortage, and jobless claims sitting near six-decade lows is exactly what you’d expect that shortage to look like on paper: a “low-hire, low-fire” economy where employers are desperate to hold onto the workers they already have.

Here’s the part that should get your attention: a labor shortage this deep can’t be solved the old-fashioned way. You can’t out-immigrate your way out of a birth-rate collapse fast enough, and you can’t train workers who don’t exist.

The only lever left is productivity — which means robotics, automation, and AI aren’t optional anymore. They’re the only way to keep the economy growing when the number of available humans is shrinking.

That’s why capital is pouring into automation and physical AI at a pace we haven’t seen before — this is the innovation cycle the demographic math is forcing into existence.

But here’s where it gets interesting for your portfolio: major innovation cycles have never been cheap, and they’ve never been non-inflationary.

Every prior boom — the 1970s energy and productivity shock and others — was accompanied by a hard-asset repricing, because building new infrastructure and new machines at scale means real demand for real materials, at the exact moment monetary policy is loose enough to fund the buildout.

The 1970s saw gold go from $35 to over $800 in a decade. That wasn’t a coincidence. It was the cost of financing a transition.

Now look at what central banks are already doing. Globally, they have spent the last several years adding to gold reserves at a pace not seen in decades, diversifying away from a dollar-denominated reserve system.

Many of them no longer view it as the only game in town.

Put it all together: a demographic worker shortage forcing an automation super-cycle, financed the way all previous ones were — through real assets — while the institutions with the longest time horizon on Earth are already buying gold hand over fist. That’s not a coincidence. That’s the setup.

The jobs data isn’t telling you the labor market is fine. It’s telling you  the next decade is going to look nothing like the last one.
