Woman Shoots Intruder In Self-Defense During Home Invasion, Other Resident Arrested For Shooting Tires

A man from Slidell, Louisiana, was shot in the leg during a home invasion after forcing his way into a residence and assaulting a woman. The woman defended herself with a firearm, and both the intruder and another man involved now face criminal charges.

SLIDELL, LA (2-minute read) — A domestic dispute in Slidell escalated into violence when a man broke into a residence and was subsequently shot by one of the homeowners in an act of self-defense. According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred Monday at a home located in the 42000 block of U.S. Highway 190 East.

Deputies say 52-year-old Tyrone Mercadel of Slidell forced entry by kicking in the front door, then proceeded to physically assault a woman living in the home. As the altercation unfolded, the woman and another homeowner, identified as 53-year-old Wayne Mercadal, attempted to de-escalate and remove Tyrone from the property.

When efforts to remove Tyrone failed, the woman retrieved a firearm and fired two rounds in self-defense. One bullet struck Tyrone in the leg, forcing him to retreat. Before Tyrone could leave, Wayne Mercadal reportedly shot at the tires of Tyrone’s vehicle in an attempt to prevent his escape.

Despite the gunfire, Tyrone managed to flee the scene. Deputies later located him and transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment. A warrant has been issued for his arrest on a charge of aggravated battery, and he will be taken into custody upon his release from medical care. Meanwhile, Wayne Mercadal was also arrested and charged with aggravated criminal damage to property for firing at the vehicle.

Understanding Firearm Use in Self-Defense Situations

Under Louisiana law, homeowners have the right to use reasonable force, including deadly force, to defend themselves against a violent intruder. The Castle Doctrine provides some legal protection when force is used to prevent unlawful entry or attack in one’s home.

However, once an intruder is fleeing or no longer poses a threat, continued use of force—such as shooting at a car—can lead to criminal charges, as seen in this case.

This incident remains under investigation by authorities.

Safety Tip: Always understand your state’s self-defense and firearm laws thoroughly. In high-stress situations, knowing the limits of lawful force can protect both your safety and your legal rights.
