Why We Carry: NYC Subway Rape Highlights Need For Self-Defense

A disturbing crime on a New York City subway underscores the importance of self-defense awareness and why many Americans choose to legally carry a concealed firearm.

NEW YORK, NY (3-minute read) — A horrifying incident aboard a New York City subway train serves as a powerful and painful reminder of why many citizens choose to carry firearms for self-defense.

On Saturday at approximately 4 a.m., a 27-year-old man was assaulted while riding a No. 1 train through Greenwich Village. According to authorities, the attacker, later identified as 36-year-old Mohammad Azeem, made disturbing sexual comments, demanded money, and then violently forced the victim to perform a sex act. Following the assault, Azeem fled the subway station.

The victim was transported to Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital and is currently in stable condition. Azeem has since been arrested and charged with rape, sexual abuse, and forcible touching.

The Reality of Urban Crime

Subway systems, particularly in major cities like New York, are often viewed as essential lifelines for commuters. But when crime strikes in these confined, low-surveillance environments, victims often have little recourse. Incidents like this one illustrate the vulnerability that many face while using public transit—especially during late-night or early morning hours when few passengers are around to intervene or witness an attack.

For law-abiding citizens, especially those trained and licensed to carry concealed firearms, such moments reveal exactly why the right to self-defense is crucial. It isn’t about fear—it’s about preparedness. While not every self-defense scenario involves a firearm, having the option when faced with a violent predator can mean the difference between becoming a victim and walking away safe.

Why We Carry

The concept of “Why We Carry” is rooted in the desire to protect oneself and others in unpredictable situations. It’s not driven by paranoia, but by the recognition that danger does not announce itself. Self-defense training, situational awareness, and responsible firearm ownership are all components of a lifestyle centered on safety and readiness.

Sadly, in places like New York City, where strict gun laws severely limit concealed carry rights, victims are often left defenseless in the face of violence.

Safety Tip: If you use public transportation regularly, especially during off-peak hours, maintain heightened awareness of your surroundings. Consider carrying a legal self-defense tool, such as pepper spray or a personal alarm if carrying a firearm isn’t permitted in your area. And always trust your instincts—if something feels wrong, act on it.
