The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) says it has broken a record regarding the speed it has taken to process disability benefits.
The VA disability program provides tax-free monthly compensation, health care, housing grants and vocational training to veterans. To qualify, veterans must have served on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training, and hold an honorable discharge and this coverage spans physical conditions like chronic back pain and hearing loss, alongside mental health struggles such as PTSD.
In a press release on Tuesday, the VA said that, as of Sept. 18, it had processed more than 3 million disability benefit claims in 2026. It amounts to more claims processed faster than in previous years.
“Putting veterans first means making VA benefits faster, better and more convenient, and under President [Donald] Trump, that’s exactly what we’re doing,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins in a statement.
Despite this faster turnaround speed, navigating the application system remains a highly complicated journey for applicants.
Data from Avard Law’s 2026 Guide emphasizes that individual timelines vary because the entire legal burden falls directly on veterans to prove an active service connection by compiling strict medical records and undergoing mandatory compensation exams.
The VA said that it had previously set a record in Fiscal Year 2025, when it processed 3.001 million claims by the end of that timeframe, which ends Sept. 30 each year.
The agency has already surpassed this figure during the current FY26 and has awarded more than $207 billion in compensation and pension benefits to veterans, according to the VA.
Other VA Wins
The VA said it has also reduced the backlog of veterans waiting for VA benefits by more than 70% since Trump took office in January 2025.
The VA claims to have cut disability claim processing times by almost half, to roughly 75.6 days, within that timeframe. The department’s claim processing accuracy now stands at 94%, which the VA described as the highest rate in two years.
The VA announced Sept. 2 that more than 1.4 million veterans who joined VA health care this year have had or scheduled medical appointments, including more than 300,000 mental health appointments and more than 12,000 emergency care visits.
The VA has opened 41 healthcare clinics since January 2025, offering more than 2.8 million appointments in FY25 outside normal operating hours.
Trump recently signed an executive order requiring the Defense Department and the VA to share military records faster, a change the VA projects could cut disability-claim processing times for recently separated service members by 20 to 30 days.
