U.S. Border Patrol Finds 67 Illegal Firearms In Backpacks

U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Grand Forks Sector’s Pembina Station seized 65 handguns, two rifles, and other firearm accessories after responding to suspicious activity near the Neche, ND border. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms is leading the investigation.

NECHE, NORTH DAKOTA (4-minute read) — U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents assigned to the Grand Forks Sector’s Pembina Station (PMB) made a significant firearms seizure during an early morning response to suspicious activity on May 15. The U.S. Border Patrol agents were alerted to illegal activity near the Neche, ND Port of Entry and swiftly acted on the report. Upon arrival, they witnessed two individuals fleeing into Canada.

While searching the area, K9 Odin led the agents to three abandoned backpacks. The contents were alarming—65 handguns, 65 pistol magazines, two rifles, one suppressor, and two rifle magazines were found inside. This substantial cache of firearms was transported to the Pembina Station for further processing.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) responded to the scene, taking custody of the firearms and accessories. They will spearhead the ongoing investigation into this unusual and significant seizure.

Chief Patrol Agent Scott D. Garrett of the Grand Forks Sector emphasized the rarity of such large-scale seizures in the region. “Bulk firearms seizures are an uncommon occurrence for the Grand Forks Sector, but this serves as a humbling reminder of how critically important our mission is,” he stated. Garrett also praised the agents for their vigilance and quick response that led to this successful outcome.

U.S. Border Patrol firearm seizures like this highlight the importance of robust border security and the need for ongoing vigilance in preventing illegal firearms trafficking. The cooperation between different law enforcement agencies plays a crucial role in maintaining national security and ensuring public safety.

Safety Tip: Always be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to local authorities. Responsible firearm ownership and adherence to legal protocols are vital for community safety.
