Tire Repair Gone Wrong: Mechanic Fatally Shoots Florida Man Who Pulled Machete During Argument

HIALEAH, FL — In an early morning incident on November 2, a heated dispute over a tire repair ended in a fatal shooting at the intersection of West Second Avenue and 29th Street in Hialeah. Hialeah Police reported that a mechanic, 29-year-old Brandon Hurst, shot and killed 36-year-old Michel Lope Montes de Oca after the latter reportedly brandished a machete and threatened him.

According to police, the altercation began around 1:30 a.m. when Montes de Oca contacted Hurst, who operates a mobile tire repair service, to assist with a flat tire. Upon inspecting the tire installed by Hurst, Montes de Oca allegedly noticed that it was a used tire and became highly agitated. Police stated that Montes de Oca grew “irate,” accusing Hurst of deception and escalating the situation with verbal threats.

Lt. Eddie Rodriguez of the Hialeah Police Department explained that the dispute quickly intensified when Montes de Oca retrieved a machete and advanced toward Hurst in a threatening manner. In response, Hurst, fearing for his safety, drew a firearm and fired multiple shots at Montes de Oca, who was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived.

Hurst was detained by police for questioning but was later released after authorities determined that the shooting appeared to be a case of justified self-defense, given the immediate and deadly threat posed by the machete-wielding assailant.

Carrying a firearm for personal protection can be crucial, especially for workers like mechanics handling late-night service calls. In this case, having a firearm likely saved Hurst’s life when he faced an unexpected, lethal threat. Without the means to defend himself, the outcome could have been far different.
