Son-in-Law Fatally Shoots 71-Year-Old Man During Argument in Mustang, OK Home

MUSTANG, OK — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon in a Mustang home, where a domestic dispute between two armed family members ended in gunfire.

According to the Mustang Police Department, 71-year-old Michael Shadid was shot and killed inside a residence near Mustang Road and State Highway 152. Law enforcement officials stated that the shooter, identified as Shadid’s son-in-law, contacted 911 after the incident, reporting that he had shot a family member following an argument.

Investigators revealed that the confrontation took place inside the home’s garage, where both individuals were allegedly armed. A single gunshot was fired, resulting in Shadid’s death. At the time of the shooting, four people were present inside the residence.

As of Monday, no arrests have been made, and authorities are still gathering information to determine whether the shooting was an act of self-defense. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist local detectives in processing the crime scene.

Mustang, a city with historically low homicide rates, has seen only one reported homicide since 2020, according to state crime statistics.

Self-Defense Considerations in Domestic Disputes

This case highlights the complexities of self-defense laws, especially when incidents involve family members. When firearms are present in heated confrontations, the risk of deadly outcomes increases. Those who carry for self-defense should prioritize de-escalation whenever possible and be mindful of the legal and ethical implications of using deadly force. Anyone involved in a self-defense shooting should immediately contact authorities, remain on the scene if safe to do so, and seek legal counsel before making detailed statements.
