Shocking Frisco Student Stabbing Leaves Teen Dead At Track Meet Over Seating Dispute

A 17-year-old student from Memorial High School in Frisco, Texas was fatally stabbed by another teen during a track meet altercation over seating. The incident has sparked grief throughout the community and raised questions about safety and security at school events.

FRISCO, TX (3-minute read) — A tragic incident unfolded at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas, during a UIL District 11-5A track meet, leaving a community devastated and a family forever changed. Seventeen-year-old Austin Metcalf, a junior at Memorial High School, was fatally stabbed in the chest by fellow 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, a student from Centennial High School, during a confrontation that allegedly began over seating.

According to Austin’s father, Jeff Metcalf, the altercation escalated when words were exchanged after Karmelo was asked to move from a section designated for Memorial students. The confrontation turned violent, resulting in Austin being stabbed in the heart. His twin brother, Hunter, held him in his final moments, desperately trying to stop the bleeding.

Austin was a standout student-athlete — an honor student, football team MVP, and a competitor in track and field. His family described him as a leader with a bright future who was working to improve his athletic performance. The incident has shaken not only the school but the broader Frisco community, many of whom gathered at the hospital following the tragedy.

Karmelo Anthony has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently being held on a $1 million bond. Authorities have yet to disclose how the knife was brought into the stadium or what specific security protocols were in place during the event. The district has since secured the stadium and transported students back to their home campuses.

Security and Situational Awareness Must Be a Priority at School Events

Experts like Dr. Alex del Carmen from Tarleton State University believe the tragedy underscores the need to reassess safety protocols at public school events. He emphasizes the importance of identifying red flags early — whether at home, in schools, or within law enforcement systems — to prevent future tragedies.

Austin’s father has expressed forgiveness for the suspect but is calling for accountability and a larger conversation about violence in schools. Despite his grief, he extended sympathy to the suspect’s family, recognizing that two lives — and two families — have been forever changed.

Safety Tip: Always stay situationally aware in crowded or emotionally charged environments like school events. Knowing your surroundings, spotting warning signs, and reporting suspicious or aggressive behavior immediately can help prevent violent incidents. If you’re a concealed carrier, ensure you’re informed on legal limitations regarding firearms at school-related events.
