Self-Defense Or Murder? Dramatic Video & Testimony In Myrtle Beach Case

New surveillance footage and dramatic witness testimonies have shaped the Stand Your Ground hearing for LaFredia Todd, accused of fatally shooting a co-worker at Nacho Hippo in 2022. The court will soon determine if the case proceeds to trial.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (1-minute read) — A Stand Your Ground hearing for LaFredia Todd, charged with the murder of her Nacho Hippo co-worker Quentin Johnson, entered its second day with the unveiling of pivotal surveillance footage. The July 2022 incident, initially believed to stem from an argument, has raised questions about self-defense.

The footage revealed Todd arguing with Johnson before retreating to another room and re-emerging to confront him, ultimately resulting in a fatal shooting. Todd’s defense contends she acted out of fear after threats from Johnson, including claims he intended to “pistol whip” her and procure a Draco firearm.

Todd’s brother, Joshua Bryant, testified he was on the phone with her during the confrontation and overheard heated exchanges. Text messages between Todd and Bryant also revealed her concerns about feeling threatened weeks before the incident.

Prosecutors countered with Todd’s alleged history of workplace violence, including an incident where she reportedly threw a frying pan at another employee. Witness Maecas Mitchell, who was present during the shooting, confirmed hearing gunshots but prioritized his safety over observing details.

As proceedings continue, the judge will determine whether Todd qualifies for immunity under the Stand Your Ground law or faces a full trial.

Safety Tip: Always ensure you understand state-specific Stand Your Ground laws if you choose to carry a firearm. Situational awareness and de-escalation techniques can be crucial in preventing violent encounters.
