ROCK HILL, S.C. — A routine Friday prayer service at Masjid Al-Salaam in Rock Hill was interrupted by a violent incident when a 27-year-old man, Travaughn West, stabbed a fellow worshipper, leading to swift intervention by an armed security guard.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on August 16 at the mosque, located on West Main Street. According to witnesses and police reports, West, who had been sporadically attending the mosque, suddenly attacked a 44-year-old man after the conclusion of prayers. The victim was stabbed twice in the abdomen, causing significant injury.

Naim Shabazz, the victim’s brother, was standing nearby when the attack occurred as reported by WSOC-TV. “At first, I thought it was just a playful punch, but when my brother screamed and I saw the blood, I knew it was serious,” Shabazz recounted. The injured man, who co-owns Shabazz Barber Shop in Rock Hill, was quickly assisted by other attendees who tried to stop the bleeding while emergency services were called.

The situation escalated further when West, still acting violently, was confronted by an armed security guard who was present at the mosque. The guard fired his weapon at West, striking him in the leg. Despite his injuries, West fled the scene but was soon apprehended by Rock Hill police on nearby Laurel Street. Both the victim and West were taken to Piedmont Medical Center for treatment. The victim is expected to make a full recovery, while West’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Police have confirmed that the attack was not religiously motivated and that the attacker and victim knew each other. Once released from the hospital, West will face charges of Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature and Possession of a Knife During a Crime of Violence.

This incident highlights the importance of security measures in places of worship. Having trained personnel on-site who can respond quickly and effectively in emergencies can save lives and prevent further harm. Worshippers should always be aware of their surroundings and support safety protocols to ensure a secure environment for all.
