Ring Camera Carjacking: Family’s Close Call

JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI (3-minute read) — Jackson police Chief Joseph Wade reports that investigators have identified two people of interest in connection with a Ring Camera carjacking.

The video, recorded on Friday, depicts two suspects approaching and firing shots at a family as they bid farewell in the driveway of their West Jackson home. “I threw my hands up like, ‘Hey, hey, hey,’ and he just pulled me down,” recounted Heather Allen.

Allen and one of her sons were outside the vehicle, while her oldest son, daughter, and two grandchildren were inside. The suspects repeatedly demanded the keys, terrifying Allen’s daughter, who was concerned for her children’s safety. One suspect forcibly removed Allen’s daughter from the car.

Her son managed to escape, prompting Allen to bravely retrieve her grandchildren from the backseat. Despite continued threats, the suspects failed to start the first car. In a bid to de-escalate the situation, Allen threw her keys on the ground, allowing the suspects to flee in her vehicle, which was parked on the lawn.

The Jackson Police Department recovered Allen’s car about two blocks away, roughly 40 minutes after the carjacking.

Tips to Stay Safe During a Carjacking:

  1. Stay Calm and Compliant: If you are confronted by a carjacker, try to remain as calm as possible. Follow the demands of the assailant without arguing or resisting. Your life is more valuable than your vehicle or any belongings inside it.
  2. Avoid Eye Contact and Sudden Movements: Avoid making direct eye contact with the carjacker, as this can be perceived as a threat. Keep your hands visible and move slowly to avoid startling the assailant. Swift or unexpected actions can escalate the situation.
  3. Plan an Escape Route and Be Aware of Exits: If you sense a carjacking situation unfolding, try to identify possible escape routes. If it’s safe to do so, drive away quickly but cautiously. If escape is not an option, comply with the carjacker’s demands while mentally noting exits and planning for a safe opportunity to seek help.
  4. If You Are Armed: Wait your turn, if you get one, to draw your firearm. Every scenario is different, and you’d want to be sure that you have the upper hand if it’s go-time. Do not make any movements for your firearm until you are sure you’d have time to draw and fire. Prioritize getting away safely.

The investigation continues, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Jackson Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS.

Safety Tip: Always stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially when arriving or leaving your home. If confronted, prioritize safety over property.
