Motorcyclist Claims Self-Defense In Deadly Road Rage Shooting After Driver Approached With Hammer

A road rage incident in Glen Burnie, Maryland, turned deadly on November 7 when a confrontation between a motorist and a motorcyclist resulted in the fatal shooting of 51-year-old Scott David Guhse. The motorcyclist, a concealed carry permit holder, reported acting in self-defense when Guhse allegedly charged at him with a hammer.

GLEN BURNIE, MD (2-minute read) — A road rage encounter in Glen Burnie, Maryland, on Thursday night left one man dead after tensions escalated between two drivers.

According to the Anne Arundel County Police, officers responded to reports of a shooting around 8:20 p.m. on November 7th near the intersection of East Furnace Branch Road and Margate Drive. Upon arrival, they found 51-year-old Scott David Guhse of Glen Burnie lying in the road with gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The armed citizen, a 22-year-old man, remained at the location and informed officers that he had acted in self-defense. Police reported that the young man, who had a concealed carry permit for his handgun, claimed he was initially targeted by Guhse while riding his motorcycle on Route 10. He stated that Guhse began tailgating him and driving erratically before pulling alongside and shouting at him.

The situation escalated when Guhse allegedly drove close to the motorcyclist, forcing him to pull off the road to avoid a collision. After stopping on East Furnace Branch Road, Guhse reportedly exited his vehicle, approached the 22-year-old aggressively, and brandished a hammer in a threatening manner. In response, the motorcyclist drew his handgun and fired, leading to the fatal outcome.

The 22-year-old immediately cooperated with law enforcement and remained at the scene to provide his account. The police are treating this as an active investigation and are encouraging any witnesses to come forward with additional information.

Safety Tip: When carrying a firearm, practice de-escalation techniques and prioritize leaving a hostile situation if possible. Use your firearm strictly as a last resort in self-defense.
