Manteca, CA Council Member Shoots Stepson in Self-Defense During Violent Confrontation

MANTECA, CA — A Manteca City Council member shot his adult stepson in what police say appears to be a self-defense incident following a violent attack inside his home. The incident occurred on January 23, 2025, at approximately 12:28 p.m. in the 1000 block of Yolo Street.

According to the Manteca Police Department, Council Member David Breitenbucher called 911 after being attacked by his stepson, 31-year-old Landon White. Breitenbucher reportedly sustained a head injury during the confrontation, prompting him to use his personal firearm to defend himself. White was shot in the abdomen and transported to a local hospital, where he remains unconscious due to medical treatment.

Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing and that no immediate charges have been filed against Breitenbucher. As part of their inquiry, detectives are awaiting the opportunity to interview White, which will be a crucial factor in determining the case’s outcome.

Breitenbucher, who has served District 3 on the Manteca City Council for six years, was treated and released from the hospital following the incident. Reports indicate that White was not a resident of Breitenbucher’s home, though the nature of their dispute has not been publicly disclosed.

Legal Considerations in Self-Defense Cases

While early reports do not indicate that White was armed, the concept of disparity of force can play a role in self-defense cases. Disparity of force refers to situations where an attacker, even if unarmed, poses a significant threat due to factors such as size, strength, or aggression. In this case, the reported head injury sustained by Breitenbucher could support the argument that he feared for his life when he resorted to using his firearm.

This incident also highlights the importance of calling 911 immediately after a defensive encounter and clearly stating what occurred. As always, self-defense laws vary by state, and individuals should be familiar with the legal standards in their jurisdiction.

The investigation remains active, and Manteca police have stated that no further updates will be provided unless there are significant developments.
