I Am a Retired US Army Special Forces NCO: The Best Striker-Fired Trigger in America Is Not on a Glock or an M&P. It Is on a 9 Walther.

Some pistols sell on reputation. The Walther PDP sells on the first trigger press. Hand one to a shooter who has spent years behind a Glock, and you’ll usually see the same reaction. A pause, a second dry-fire, and then a grin.  Walther has been building one of the best striker-fired triggers on the market for more than a decade, and the PDP puts everything it learned into a single-duty gun. It’s optic-ready out of the box, comes in a size for nearly every job, and has quietly become one of America’s most respected polymer pistols.

However, it isn’t for everyone. Let’s get into why.

Walther PDP: A Trigger With A Pedigree

The PDP didn’t come out of nowhere.

Walther entered the polymer pistol market with the P99 (used by James Bond in “Casino Royale”) in 1996, and in 2011 it introduced the PPQ.

The PPQ’s “Quick Defense” trigger broke between 4.8 and 5.6 pounds of pull with only 0.4 inches of travel, and many shooters, myself included, thought it was the best factory trigger on any striker-fired gun. 

The PPQ M2 followed in 2013 with a push-button magazine release for the American market.

The trouble was that the PPQ never sold as well as a Glock or an M&P.

It was a shooter’s gun that stayed a well-kept secret.

Walther’s answer, in February 2021, was the PDP, short for Performance Duty Pistol.

It kept the DNA of the PPQ and the Q5 Match competition guns, then rebuilt the rest from the ground up for the red-dot era.

What You Get In The PDP

The centerpiece is the Performance Duty Trigger. Walther lists it at 5 pounds, 9 ounces.

However, American Rifleman’s test guns broke between 4 pounds, 8 ounces and 5 pounds, with distinct take-up, a firm wall, and a short, crisp break.

The reviewer called it “superb against all comers,” and he meant every pistol, including hammer-fired guns. 

Their full-size gun put 27 of 30 five-shot groups under two inches at 25 yards.

The slide carries Walther’s SuperTerrain serrations, squared grooves roughly a tenth of an inch wide and an eighth of an inch deep that stand proud of the slide.

They give you real purchase with wet or gloved hands.

The grip texture is aggressive enough to lock in without shredding your side on a carry gun. Three backstraps come in the box.

Every PDP is optic-ready.

The slide is milled for removable plates that fit the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Aimpoint ACRO, Trijicon SRO, Holosun 507C, and a long list of others.

The polymer sights use the Glock dovetail pattern, so replacement sights are widely available.

I got to put a few magazines downrange firing the PDP with a Holosun SCS-PDP-GR green dot.

It attaches directly to Walther PDP 2.0 cuts without adapter plates, keeping a low profile and co-witnessing with factory iron sights.

It shoots very well and is an excellent, if underrated, option.

The full-size 4.5-inch model is 8 inches long, 5.4 inches tall, and 1.4 inches wide.

It weighs 24 ounces, holds 18 9mm rounds, and has an MSRP of $649.

The compact has a 4-inch barrel and a 15-round grip, and you can mix grip and slide lengths to suit the job.

The Honest Trade-Off Is Its Size

The PDP is a big pistol. At 1.4 inches wide, the full-size gun is noticeably thicker than a Glock 17, and the deep slide serrations add bulk up top.

It’s built as a duty gun.

You can carry the compact concealed, and plenty of people do.

However, if deep concealment is the priority, I wouldn’t reach for this pistol.

The second knock is ecosystem.

Walther’s aftermarket has grown, and the major holster makers now cut for the PDP.

Still, it doesn’t come close to Glock, where every holster, magazine, and trigger part on earth fits.

That matters less than it used to.

It still matters.

The third issue was hand size, and Walther addressed it head-on.

In April 2022, the company released the PDP F-Series, developed for women’s hands.

It has a reduced-reach trigger, a slimmer grip that still holds 15 rounds, and a slide that takes roughly 20 percent less effort to rack. 

It was marketed to women.

However, anyone with smaller hands or who struggles with a stiff slide should consider it.

At the other end of the spectrum, Walther introduced the PDP Steel Frame series in April 2024.

The full-size steel gun weighs 40.6 ounces, and its triggers averaged about 4 pounds, 8 ounces.

That’s a competition gun, and it shoots like one.

The Verdict? The Trigger Is The Best 

If you want a 9mm that shoots flat, points naturally, takes nearly any red dot (or green dot), and has a trigger that makes you a better shot on day one, the PDP belongs at the top of your list. 

For a duty gun, a home-defense pistol, or a belt gun under a jacket, it’s a great value and hard to beat at $649.

Walther spent a decade building the best striker trigger, but nobody bought it. With the PDP, people finally noticed.
