Flying with Guns: Episode 35 – Spirit from MSY to LAS

Episode 35 was filmed on November 28, 2025, flying Spirit Airlines from New Orleans to Las Vegas. This trip was one of those flights where everything went exactly the way it should when everyone involved understands their policies and procedures.

Check-In at MSY

I walked up to the counter, declared my firearms like I always do, and the process moved smoothly from there. The agent handed me the declaration cards, I filled them out, placed them in the Fedex sleeve I have on the hard-sided case inside my luggage, and locked everything up.

One thing worth noting is that no one asked to open the case to “see if it’s unloaded,” which still happens from time to time depending on the agent or the airline. Spirit handled it correctly—no unnecessary requests and no confusion.

They didn’t ask me to wait, but I always give it about 15 minutes before heading to security just in case TSA needs to inspect the case. I use standard non-TSA locks, which means TSA can’t open the case without me present. Most of the time, everything is cleared behind the scenes with no issues, and that was the case here.

Arrival in Las Vegas

After landing at Harry Reid International Airport, I went straight to baggage claim. My luggage came out on the regular carousel with the rest of the bags. The locks were still intact, and everything was exactly as I packed it. I grabbed it and was on my way.

Final Thoughts

This was another straightforward, textbook flight with a declared firearm. No delays, no misunderstandings, and no unnecessary requests. When airline staff know the policies and TSA follows their part of the process, this is exactly how flying with a checked firearm should look.
