INDIANAPOLIS, IN (3-minute read) – Two individuals have been detained following a fatal road rage incident on Interstate 65 near Indianapolis, which tragically culminated in a shooting and subsequent vehicle crash into a pond on Wednesday.

The incident was initially reported to Indiana State Police (ISP) troopers after a collision was observed on I-65, north of Greenwood. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the altercation escalated to gunfire, which caused one vehicle to veer off the road and submerge in a nearby pond. The driver of the submerged vehicle, 35-year-old Ryan Hawkins, was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot and then ejected from the vehicle.

Further into the investigation, ISP arrested 24-year-old Andre Briski of Indianapolis, on preliminary charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. Additionally, Shawna Rowland from Greenwood faces charges of assisting a criminal and obstructing justice.

In light of this tragic event, it is vital to discuss the importance of avoiding road rage and confrontational behavior while driving. Road rage can escalate quickly and dangerously. Drivers are advised to stay calm, avoid eye contact with aggressive drivers, and not respond to provocation. If you feel threatened, it is crucial to stay in your vehicle and, if necessary, drive to a police station or a public area. Keeping a cool head and not engaging can prevent the situation from escalating into something more serious.

The formal charges against the suspects will be determined by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office at a later date as the investigation continues to unfold.

Firearm Safety Tip: Maintain a clear mindset when carrying a firearm; avoid aggressive behavior and deescalate confrontations whenever possible to ensure safety for everyone involved.
