Armed Teen Stopped by Armed Pilot After Attempted Aircraft Hijacking in Texarkana

TEXARKANA, AR — A tense situation unfolded early Tuesday morning at Texarkana Regional Airport when an armed teenager attempted to commandeer an aircraft but was stopped by a legally armed pilot before police took him into custody.

According to the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department, the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. at Signature Aviation, a private aviation service provider at the airport. Authorities say the suspect, a teenager armed with both a rifle and a handgun, approached the facility and demanded access to a plane.

Airport employees quickly recognized the threat and took decisive action by retreating to a secure location and calling 911.

While law enforcement was en route, the teen made his way onto the airfield, where private aircraft are stored. A pilot for a local private business spotted the suspect and, acting swiftly, drew his own firearm. The pilot ordered the teen to the ground, and the suspect complied. The pilot then disarmed him and held him until officers arrived moments later to take him into custody.

The suspect now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, attempted aggravated robbery, and first-degree terroristic threatening. Due to his age, he was transferred to a juvenile detention center. Police have not released information about his motive.

Airport Director Paul Mehrlich commended both the quick thinking of the Signature Aviation staff and the decisive action of the armed pilot. “Today, we are thankful that there were no injuries, no lives lost. It really was through the actions of this pilot and the staff that lives were saved today,” Mehrlich said.

Authorities emphasized that the airport remains secure and that normal flight operations would continue without disruption. Officials are also reviewing security protocols to determine if any additional safety measures should be implemented.

The Importance of Armed Citizens in Crisis Situations

This incident highlights the critical role that responsible, armed citizens can play in stopping violent threats before they escalate. The pilot’s quick decision-making and readiness prevented a potentially disastrous situation from unfolding, demonstrating why responsible firearm ownership can be an essential safeguard in public spaces.

For those who carry, this is a reminder of the importance of situational awareness and readiness. Engaging an armed suspect is a serious decision that requires training, discipline, and knowledge of the law. In this case, the pilot acted decisively, stopping the threat without firing a shot—an ideal outcome in a high-risk situation.
