Weekend Open Thread: Remembering Paul Harrell edition

0

Hello Everybody, it is Friday. You made it. Pat yourself on the back and settle in for another installment of memey goodness.

I know we are a Knife blog, and not firearms, but there is considerable overlap between the communities. Many of you have probably watched a Paul Harrell video along the way. Paul passed away this week, from pancreatic cancer. He had recorded a farewell video, which was released by his family posthumously. It blew up online, even beyond gun YouTube.

You know that Paul was a significant figure, as his viral farewell even attracted a positive profile in the UK’s Daily Mail. Something that would normally be unheard of for a gun vlogger in the hoplophobic British press.

The man even apologized to his viewers for dying. Who does that?

In a crowded YouTube world of personality driven gun channels, Paul always stood out as a soft-spoken, and down to earth, a class act to the end.

He wasn’t flashy, in fact the tan shooting coat became something of a trademark. Safety and instruction were Paul’s thing. He was a Veteran of both the US Army and the USMC.  He was not overly political, beyond Second Amendment issues,  Paul was first and foremost a teacher.

So I dedicate this first section of gun memes to the late Paul Harrell.

Vaya con Dios Sempai. You will be missed.

I had chosen the gun theme early in the week, when I learned of the passing of Paul Harrell. That was before the shooting in Georgia, and I offer my heartfelt condolences to those affected. It is a tragic situation, but we see what happens to a disarmed populace in Europe, and it is obvious that gun control doesn’t solve the problem.

Cracking down on gang violence would significantly lower gunshot injury and death, and a more critical examination of SSRI pharmaceuticals would likely have an effect on the blessedly rare mass shooting events.

Why would you bring your mom to speed dating night?

There are some strange videos out there.

Ouch!

Glockamole looks like the better weapon, though the Glockolate would be tastier.

Schrodinger’s weapon.

That is strangely accurate.

Well maintained, more like 4-5/6.

But still funny nonetheless.

Checking in on the Events Calendar, there are no shows this weekend, but two the next.

Louisiana Knife Show

Ignore the 2023 date, I confirmed…

Same with the NCCA Show:

NCCA One-Day Knife Show

We will get the date display fixed as soon as we can.

Last week I mentioned that among my extremely varied musical playlist is a solid representation of 90’s hiphop. I teased, or threatened depending on your perspective, to share Warren G.

The hook-man on this song, Nate Dogg, passed away over a decade ago. But he was influential enough that he was eulogized on NPR of all places. I remember hearing it live, but it remains one of the all time most incongruous and unintentionally amusing pieces I have ever heard. Even if you don’t watch the videos, I promise the 2 minutes of the NPR piece is worth a listen. If nothing else, it will give you context and verify that I am not making it up about his stature.

You will thank me. Maybe.

College football is in full swing. Except for Florida State. Someon one forgot to tell them the season started.

They did get the shaft last year when they were left out of the playoff, but they completely failed to prove the haters right.

This might be their best option…

I Heart College Football.

Baseball too. Sod you Dolan. I miss Cleveland Baseball.

The breakdance meme keeps on giving.

How dare he?

And finally, the Boeing Starliner situation continues to bear memes.

Time to give away a knife, in this case the CRKT Nax…

Congrats Stuart B. Tell us how it does on your tomatoes.

Our next giveaway is a CRKT Shennanigan. Assisted opening Ken Onion design, as you can probably tell by the name.

Click here to read more from CRKT.

Usual rules apply…Up to 5 comments or replies are your entries, and if you are a new commenter, yours count double, but will be held in moderation until I can approve the first batch.

Good luck everybody.

and now onto our random memes of the week…

(excited Joe Flowers noises)

Some cats rock, but most are just mooches…

Don’t overreact or anything…

A sword is the only therapy I need.

How many rings can you descend?

Middle School Gangsta…

This isn’t good…

…and he glows.

The number of the counting shall be three.

Operation: Month Python Edition.

They can get it from the Operation game. Right hip.

My next lacrosse pep talk.

True Evil.

You chose…poorly.

Good question.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

mmm.

You can get the death penalty in Detroit for that.

Classic Detroit.

This might be an improvement on British food…

Metric is for commies…

BUFF ftw…

Make your shadow great again.

Sounds like a great opportunity…

The cat is right…

Definitely.

Don’t do it.

This broke my brain…

…And made me want fried chicken.

I am not sure where they are going with this.

The story of my life. But it keeps things interesting.

Last week we celebrated the escape and rescue of Qaid Farhan Alkadi, a Beduin Muslim Israeli who was among the hostages taken on October 7th. This week we mourn the murder of 6 others, including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin. They were executed when their captors found themselves cornered in the tunnels beneath Raffah with the IDF closing in.

But somehow it is Israel’s fault for trying to rescue them.

As I write this, it is the 11 month anniversary of the massacre of October 7th, 2023. 11 months of unspeakable horror being endured by those held hostage. It could all end tomorrow if Hamas would just…

It is as simple as that.

As has become the WOT format over the past year, the reprise of our musical guest is a good way to segue out of an unfortunately serious section of what is meant to be a humor post. So once again, Warren G…

Not as classic as Regulator, but a solid West Coast tune.

Harambe was the Hero we didn’t deserve.

Probably the single most clever joke in the whole run of the Flintstones.

I promised I would finish this Saturday night, and I have.

Thank you everyone for your patience. The Tusculum prospect day was a good experience for my daughter. Probably not where she will end up going, but you need to get the first college visit under your belt so you can begin to make comparisons.

Have a great Sunday everyone.
