Steelhead Introduces Larger, Affordable Drifter 2 Pistol Lock Box

Lightweight & Secure for Travel

Shakopee, MN (May 5, 2026 ) Steelhead continues to expand its line of pistol lock boxes. Both the new, larger Drifter 2 and Drifter 1 lock boxes feature Steelhead quality engineering and construction at an affordable price. Steelhead Drifter lock boxes are suitable for traveling with your firearms to the range, school pickup or flying.

The Steelhead Drifter 2 pistol lock box is a secure, lightweight storage solution measuring 8.5 inches wide, 11 inches long, and 3 inches high, weighing just 6.5 pounds. Designed to store 2 handguns or larger optics, it’s 2” wider and 1” longer than the Drifter 1. The TSA-Compliant Drifter lock boxes feature keyed-entry and are built with 16-gauge formed and TIG-welded cold rolled steel, ¼” staked and welded hinges, double shear lock mechanism and a high-security anti-pick lock. The Drifter 2 lockbox is available for $109 USD and includes three keys. “The Drifter 1 lock box was an instant hit delivering great quality at a great price. But some customers want a slightly larger option,” said Steelhead Outdoors Co-Founder Corey Meyer. “The Drifter 2 meets consumers’ request to accommodate more firearms, keep it lightweight, secure and priced right.”

Steelhead Outdoors offers optional American-made security cables to tether the lock box to immovable objects to enhance security and help deter thieves. Thicker than the competition, these beefy cables feature a heavy-duty ¼” galvanized steel cable, nylon-coated to a 5/16” thickness and rated for 6,000 pounds of force. Designed for universal compatibility, the cables come with a looped end and a stopper button to anchor securely to the lock box. Available in both 3-foot and 6-foot versions, these cables are an excellent theft deterrent.

Steelhead also offers the HD pistol lock box series crafted entirely from American 12-gauge steel. Steelhead’s HD pistol boxes are 75% to 160% thicker than most competitors who manufacture overseas using 16- to 20-gauge metal. These lock boxes are equipped with oversized ¼” hinges that are staked, welded, and feature an integrated pin guard to resist punch attacks. Steelhead’s hinges offer twice the thickness of most standard hinges. Interior protection includes dual 3/8” foam layers on the bottom to customize firearm fit, and thick, compressible convoluted foam on top to secure items during movement. Original lock boxes feature a textured black powder coat finish paired with a charcoal gray handle and start at $170 USD.

Thanks to their portable design, Steelhead’s lock boxes provide firearm owners with a practical solution for securing their weapons at home, in the car, or at the office. They can help prevent accidents and reduce the risk of theft. In some states, they may also assist gun owners in meeting legal requirements for firearm storage. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, storing firearms locked and out of sight when not in use is a crucial safety practice. Peace of mind is an intangible, but it can be reassuring that a firearm is locked out of the reach of children, pets, or unauthorized individuals.

Steelhead proudly makes its Made-in-USA weapon storage units in Shakopee, MN. Steelhead Outdoors offers pistol lock boxes, modular gun safes, underbed safes, gun and ammo cabinets, vault doors, storage accessories, and custom options for consumers and law enforcement. About Steelhead Outdoors:

Founded in 2016, Steelhead Outdoors is an innovative safe company offering the only American-made, modular, fire-insulated gun safe available currently on the market. Longtime friends, engineers and avid outdoorsmen, Charlie Pehrson and Corey Meyer, searched for a gun safe that was Made in USA, adaptable and offered a respectable level of fire and theft protection, but they soon realized this product didn’t exist. Since they couldn’t buy it, they decided to build it. Steelhead Outdoors was created with the goal of building a safe that customers could, and would want to, take with them from one home to the next, or pass down from one generation to the next. Four years of research and development went into the flagship Nomad Series, to create a durable, lasting and innovative modular gun safe. Headquartered in Shakopee, Minnesota, where all products are proudly designed, manufactured and shipped. Learn more at SteelheadOutdoors.com
