Spring Into Success: Simple Tips for Stronger Trees This Season

Alachua, FL (March 2, 2026) – Spring planting season is here, and there’s no better time to set trees up for long-term success. Whether planting for wildlife, fresh fruit, pollinators, or property enhancement, a few simple steps can make all the difference between a tree that survives and one that thrives.

Pick the Right Spot:

Sunlight and drainage are everything. Most fruit, mast, and landscape trees need at least six to eight hours of full sun and well-drained soil. Avoid low areas that stay wet after rain. Matching your tree to your USDA Hardiness Zone also ensures it can handle your local climate.

Prep Before You Plant:

Clear weeds and loosen compacted soil ahead of time. Healthy roots establish faster in soil that drains well and isn’t competing with aggressive vegetation.

Give Them Room to Grow:

Young trees may look small now, but many will grow wide and tall. Proper spacing improves airflow, reduces disease pressure, and leads to better fruit and nut production down the road.

Water Wisely:

Water is the most important factor in the first year. Keep soil consistently moist, but not soaked, as roots establish. Adding mulch around the base helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Just keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk.

Easy on the Extras:

Skip fertilizer at planting time. Let trees focus on root development first. Light pruning in late winter or early spring can help shape strong structure, but most young trees don’t need much.

With the right start this spring, trees will reward landowners and homeowners alike for years to come, producing fruit, attracting wildlife, and enhancing landscapes season after season.
