CAMP PERRY, Ohio – SGT Christopher Hudock, 34, of Columbus, GA, brought home the Steve Reiter Trophy from the 2024 National Matches after earning the overall win in the Any Sight portion of the Pistol 2700 Aggregate. Hudock, a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU), cleared the win by a margin of 10 points over the second place competitor with a score of 2641-110X.
The Pistol 2700 Aggregate is the culmination of three separate 900 Aggregate Matches: Center Fire, .45 Pistol and .22 Pistol. Competitors in the events fire in Any Sight, Metallic Sight and .22 Pistol categories.
“Honestly, I was just finding zeroes,” Hudock said with a laugh. “I had no expectations coming up here this year.”
As Hudock explained, the USAMU pistol team is competitively split, with half participating in action pistol events throughout the year and the other half competing in bullseye matches, like the ones fired during the National Matches. Having spent most of the year in the action pistol realm, he admitted to only having competed in a few bullseye matches before making the trip to Camp Perry.
Luckily, composed of plenty of experience as a junior before moving on to the USAMU in 2015, Hudock has become accustomed to a comfortable process with each pistol within the 2700 Aggregate.
“I used to shoot all my guns slightly different – a little bit heavier trigger – and I could really feel the difference, and I wanted that,” he said. “Now, since I have such little time to dedicate to bullseye, I try to streamline everything so that they feel approximately the same.”
Hudock has had a successful year already, giving a series of noteworthy performances at the 2024 CMP Bianchi Cup action pistol event in May. There, he managed to earn the overall Production Optic National Champion title and cleared a score of 1920 – a first for the event that has been a staple in the pistol world for over four decades.
“These two sports (action and bullseye), physically, are not the same, but I think the amount of time I spent shooting Bianchi, tracking that optic, really helped me out with shooting optics here,” he said.
Following the National Matches and leading up to the InterService Pistol Championships in November, Hudock hopes to attend Sapper School, a combat engineer course where he’ll learn field construction duties, and he also plans to continue competing in more action pistol matches.
Other National Matches wins to Hudock’s credit over his career include the President’s Match in 2018 along with the prestigious National Trophy Individual (NTI) Match in 2016. An extremely talented marksman, Hudock has earned Distinguished Badges in Service Rifle, Service Pistol and .22 Rimfire Pistol as well as the respect of his peers who have been following him since he was an accomplished junior competitor from North Carolina.
“I’ve known him for at least 15 years,” said John Bickar, winner of the 2024 esteemed President’s Pistol Match. “I’ve traveled to World Championships with him – I’ve traveled all over the country and have seen him grow as a soldier, as a shooter and as a person. I could not be more proud of how well he shot at Camp Perry this year.”
Outside of the National Trophy Pistol events, Hudock claimed overall wins in both of CMP’s 2024 Pistol Games events, with a score of 390-18X in the As-Issued 1911 Pistol Match and a score of 385-11X in the Military & Police Service Pistol Match.
