Outdoor Life’s multi-media producer Roy Holdford has been traveling the country in his van, chasing turkeys all spring. While his season is mostly one massive road trip, he’s also spent a good amount of time in airports before jetting back home. Amid all those travels, the new Pelican Aegis carry-on bag has proven to be a durable and useful piece of gear.
This is a roller bag / duffle bag hybrid that is built with Pelican’s expected toughness. Here’s how the bag has performed so far this season.

The Aegis was designed to be a carry-on bag (it fits the maximum size limit for major airlines), but it’s more versatile than that. Holdford was able to fit his laptop, camera gear, and a few days worth of clothing into the Aegis. The bag expands slightly to fit whatever you need.
Because the bag has EVA molding in the shell and a tough polycarbonate base, it keeps those more fragile electronics safe. It also has a clever internal system for strapping down anything you don’t want to slide around.
The Aegis is compatible with Pelican’s Modpak system which is basically a set of organizational bags that fit within the larger bag. These are ideal for holding and organizing tools, random gear items, and toiletries. They especially come in handy when going through airport security (your bag won’t be a mess of random items).
The bag is made of Cordura which is a heavy-duty fabric designed for abrasion resistance, tear strength, and repelling water. It’s the same stuff military packs are made of.
Even the wheels on this bag are thoughtfully designed. There’s no wobble or slop to them, which is simply more proof that real workmanship was used to make this bag.

What the 22″ Aegis Carry-On 4-Wheel Rolling Hybrid Duffel Does Best
This is a tough, versatile travel bag. It’s ideal for airport travel especially if you’re transporting heavier gear that needs to be protected, like cameras, hard drives, and laptops.
Where the Aegis Can Improve
The higher price point on this bag means that it will be out of reach for many travelers.

Final Thoughts on the Aegis 22
Pelican has a handful of products in the Aegis line, including backpacks, larger roller bags, and commuter bags. But this new, 22-inch roller bag is an ideal choice for traveling outdoorsmen. It’s just big enough, plenty durable, and it’s well made. Yes, it’s an expensive piece of gear, but it also includes a 5-year warranty, and we expect that it will survive much longer than that. While a few years of hard use will burn out cheaper, more basic carry-on bags, we expect that the Aegis will last for the long haul.
