For the most part, a trout reel just needs to hold your fly line. Still, you want a reel with a strong enough drag to put the brakes on a giant fish when needed. Beyond a good drag, a fly reel should look nice, too—at least in my opinion. That’s why I like Hardy’s Sovereign so much. I’m a sucker for a good-looking fly reel, so I got my hands on one and put it to work. After fishing with it for a year, it’s become my go-to trout reel. Here’s a closer look at the Hardy Sovereign 5/6-weight.

After being off the market for two decades, the Sovereign was reintroduced in 2023. The design stays true to the original 1987 version, with a solid faceplate and ported spool. Hardy engraved “The Sovereign” in cursive on the face plate, with the reel size engraved below. The reel also has gold accents and gold-colored controls, a clear homage to the original design. Beyond updated materials, the biggest differences are the black and Spitfire (silver) colorways, which replace the original gold finish. I prefer the silver, but you can’t go wrong with either color.

Like most Hardy rods and reels, the Sovereign is made in Alnwick, England. The solid faceplate features an adjustable knob to control the disc drag system. I tested the 5/6 weight model, but the reel also comes in 7/8-, 8/9-, and 9/10-weight versions. The Sovereign has a left- or right-hand selector, making it easy to switch the retrieve. You just need to remove the line and respool it for whatever direction you want.

My Sovereign trout reel weighs 5.3 ounces—not too heavy and not too light. It balanced perfectly with the two 5-weight rods I tested it on. The reel also comes with a classy, padded leather case. All around, this is a top-notch reel, but it comes with an expensive $625 price tag.

Test Results

I spooled my Sovereign reel with Orvis Pro Trout WF-5 floating line and paired it with both my Sage Arrow 5-weight and Moonshine Vesper 5-weight. I was somewhat skeptical about how the disc drag would hold up against big trout, but the drag performed flawlessly. Every time it engaged, the drag was smooth and consistent as line peeled from the spool. The Sovereign produces a classic-sounding click when a fish makes a run, and the sound suits the reel perfectly.

As for looks, the Sovereign is as clean as a fly reel can get. Simply put, the Sovereign is a modern classic. It gives off old-school steelhead Spey-casting vibes—and beefier versions can certainly handle big steelies—while offering modern materials and excellent performance. I’m not sure what else you could need or want from a trout reel.

Final Thoughts

Let’s be honest, most people aren’t going to spend $625 on a trout reel just to hold fly line. But if you have the cash for a top-end reel, the Hardy Sovereign is hard to beat. It has the classic looks old-timers and youngsters can both appreciate—and the modern materials and performance to back them up. Like I said, it’s a modern classic.
