BHA Receives 3K for Virtual Fencing Stewardship Project in CO

WALDEN, CO — Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is proud to announce the awarding of a $313,200 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) for wildlife and grasslands conservation in southern Colorado.

BHA staff and volunteers will be utilizing virtual fencing, a new technology that helps move domestic livestock in efficient grazing patterns, to increase access for wildlife to essential forage and refuge areas. Funded by NWFW’s RESTORE Program and the Bureau of Land Management, this first-of-its-kind BHA virtual fencing project supports established conservation and rangeland management plans by leveraging innovative technologies to address wildlife and habitat conservation challenges. By enhancing habitat permeability across 10,774 acres of critical wildlife territory, the project will benefit species such as elk, pronghorn, and greater sage-grouse, while removing barriers, aiding wildlife movement, and decreasing injury and mortality associated with traditional fencing.

“We are proud to spearhead this project, which aligns perfectly with our mission to conserve wildlife habitats and improve the sustainability of our natural resources,” said Brittany Parker, BHA Habitat Stewardship Manager. “The introduction of virtual fencing technology will not only support ranchers in livestock management but also play a crucial role in facilitating wildlife movement and habitat connectivity.”

This grant will be funding just part of BHA’s new stewardship program, which has been completing projects across North America, taking care of our public lands and waters. Alongside this virtual fencing partnership, BHA will be removing 10 miles of traditional fencing from the landscape.

“Our outdoor traditions and Western heritage are deeply rooted in the responsible stewardship of our natural resources,” Britt continued. “This project exemplifies how innovative solutions can harmonize the needs of agricultural practices with wildlife conservation. Through collaborative efforts with ranchers and leveraging the latest technology, we can achieve a balance that benefits both the rancher and wildlife.”

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers seeks to ensure North America’s outdoor heritage of hunting and fishing in a natural setting, through education and work on behalf of wild public lands, waters, and wildlife.
