OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — A mother of four defended her home Tuesday night by shooting a man who forcibly entered her apartment after yelling threats and racial slurs.

According to local media outlet News 9, Oklahoma City Police identified the suspect as 37-year-old John Adame, who had been released from prison just last week. Police say Adame attempted to break into multiple apartments before finally kicking in the door of a woman’s residence. She fired a single shot, striking him in the neck.

Neighbor Breeann Wetselline told reporters that she and her husband first encountered Adame outside their apartment, where he appeared to be sleeping. Initially, they assumed he was seeking shelter from the cold and

chose not to call authorities. However, when he later attempted to enter their home, they became alarmed.

“Next thing you know, we heard someone try to open our door,” Wetselline recalled. Moments later, Adame turned his attention to their neighbor’s apartment, yelling threats before breaking through the door.

According to Msgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department, the woman inside warned Adame that she was armed. When he continued to force his way in, she fired, causing him to flee. Officers later found Adame in a nearby building, where he was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for surgery.

Once he recovers, Adame will be booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center. Court records indicate he previously served time for a grand larceny conviction in Carter County.

Self-Defense Takeaways

This incident highlights the importance of having a firearm readily accessible for home defense. The mother in this case was prepared and gave verbal warnings before taking action, emphasizing the need to be ready to defend oneself when faced with a violent intruder. It also serves as a reminder to stay vigilant and take potential threats seriously, as situations can escalate quickly.

Fortunately, the woman and her children were unharmed, but this case serves as a reminder that home invasions can happen anywhere, even in normally quiet neighborhoods.
