Armed Burglary Suspect Shot and Arrested After Confrontation with Victim’s Family in McLoud, Oklahoma

MCLOUD, OK — A suspect is recovering from a gunshot wound and now faces multiple charges following a series of burglaries in the area. The incident unfolded Saturday afternoon when local authorities responded to reports of stolen property, including a firearm, money, and other items.

According to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, deputies had been investigating a string of burglaries in the McLoud area when they received a call about a recent theft. The suspect, identified as Cameron Wahpekeche, was spotted hours later by the burglary victim’s family. Wahpekeche was carrying a stolen duffle bag when he was confronted by the victim’s relatives.

During the confrontation, Wahpekeche reportedly brandished a firearm. Gunfire was exchanged, and Wahpekeche sustained a gunshot wound. The situation escalated into a physical altercation, with Wahpekeche wrestling on the ground with the individuals who confronted him. According to authorities, Wahpekeche fired additional shots during the struggle.

Deputies arrived shortly after and discovered Wahpekeche had fled into thick brush about 200 yards away. After a brief pursuit, deputies apprehended him despite his attempts to resist arrest. The affidavit indicates that Wahpekeche attempted to bite a deputy during the arrest.

Wahpekeche was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into the Pottawatomie County Jail. He faces charges including burglary and illegal possession of a firearm due to his prior felony convictions. Authorities noted Wahpekeche’s extensive criminal history, which includes burglary, assault, and domestic violence.

Investigations are ongoing to determine if Wahpekeche is connected to other burglaries in the area. No injuries were reported among the family members or deputies involved in the incident.

Confronting a suspect is inherently dangerous, especially if the individual is armed, as was the case in this incident. The victim’s family made the decision to engage with the suspect upon spotting him, which escalated into a gunfight. Thankfully, no family members were injured, and the suspect was ultimately apprehended. However, it’s crucial to carefully consider whether confronting a potentially armed and dangerous individual is worth the risk, especially when only material possessions are at stake. When possible, prioritize personal safety and contact law enforcement to handle the situation.
