Road Rage Turns Violent In Urbana: Concealed Carry Holder Fires In Defense

A road rage incident in Urbana, IL, ended with a male passenger hospitalized in intensive care after being shot by a concealed carry permit holder who claimed self-defense. Police continue to investigate.

URBANA, IL (2-minute read) — A heated road rage incident in Urbana on Saturday escalated into violence, leaving a man hospitalized in intensive care. Urbana Police Department officers responded to the intersection of Busey Avenue and Park Street around 4:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting.

The confrontation reportedly began near Five Points and continued until one driver entered Carle Hospital’s emergency department parking lot, seemingly attempting to distance themselves. However, a female driver and her male passenger followed. The situation escalated when the woman exited her vehicle with a baseball bat, and the male passenger approached the solo driver with his hand concealed under his shirt, giving the impression he was armed.

The solo driver, a concealed carry permit holder, perceived a threat and drew their legally carried firearm, firing multiple shots at the advancing male passenger. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains in intensive care.

Urbana police are actively investigating the incident. Authorities encourage anyone with information to contact Urbana police at 217-384-2320 or to submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 217-373-TIPS, 373tips.com, or the “P3 Tips” mobile app.

Safety Tip: Always de-escalate confrontations whenever possible. Use firearms strictly as a last resort in life-threatening situations and ensure you understand your state’s laws on self-defense.
