PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI — On November 11, 2024, two separate incidents occurred involving U.S. airlines operating in Haitian airspace. A Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was struck by gunfire while approaching Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince. The aircraft sustained multiple bullet holes, and a flight attendant suffered minor injuries. The plane was diverted to the Dominican Republic, where it landed safely.

In a related incident, a JetBlue flight departing Port-au-Prince for New York was also hit by gunfire. Post-flight inspections revealed bullet damage to the aircraft’s exterior. No injuries were reported in this case.

These events led to the temporary closure of Toussaint Louverture International Airport. Several airlines responded by suspending flights to and from Haiti. JetBlue announced a suspension of all flights to Haiti through December 2, 2024. Spirit Airlines also suspended its flights, with the duration of the suspension pending further evaluation. American Airlines canceled flights to Haiti until November 18, 2024.

The U.S. Embassy in Haiti issued a security alert, warning of gang-led efforts to block travel to and from Port-au-Prince, which may include armed violence and disruptions to roads, ports, and airports.

These incidents underscore the importance of thorough research and situational awareness when planning international travel. Understanding the security dynamics of your destination is crucial to ensure personal safety and avoid unexpected disruptions. Travelers should consult official travel advisories, monitor local news, and have contingency plans in place. Being informed and prepared can mitigate risks and help navigate unforeseen events, such as sudden airport closures or flight suspensions.
