Scott City Homeowner Fatally Shoots Intruder Who Kicked in Back Door

SCOTT CITY, MO — A homeowner in Scott City defended himself by fatally shooting an intruder during a home invasion on Saturday, August 24, according to local authorities.

As reported by local media outlet KFVS12, the incident occurred just before 2:45 p.m. when the homeowner, whose name has not been released, called 911 to report that someone had broken into his home. According to Scott City Police, the intruder, identified as 39-year-old Jason L. Vermillion, forcibly entered the residence by kicking in the back door.

The homeowner, upon hearing the intrusion, armed himself with a handgun and confronted Vermillion. Feeling threatened, the homeowner fired at Vermillion, striking him. Police and emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and immediately began life-saving efforts on Vermillion, who was then transported to a hospital in Cape Girardeau. Unfortunately, Vermillion succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Scott City Police processed the scene and conducted a thorough investigation, treating the case as a potential homicide. However, after reviewing the evidence, Scott City Police Chief Christopher M. Griggs announced that no charges would be filed against the homeowner. Chief Griggs emphasized that the homeowner acted in self-defense, protecting both himself and his property.

Members of the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Scott City Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services provided support during the incident.

This case highlights the importance of being prepared to defend yourself in your own home. In situations where an intruder forcibly enters, having a plan and the means to protect yourself can be crucial. Remember, knowing your local laws regarding self-defense is essential to ensure that your actions are legally justified.
