Man With Revoked CCW Permit Arrested After Being Found With Loaded Gun, Drugs During Traffic Stop

A Norristown man was charged with multiple offenses, including carrying a firearm without a license, after a traffic stop led to the discovery of a loaded 9mm handgun and drugs. The man had a revoked concealed carry permit and now faces serious legal consequences.

NORRISTOWN, PA (2-minute read) — A routine traffic stop in Montgomery Township led to serious charges against a Norristown man, Amir Tyrek Wylie, after police discovered a loaded firearm and drugs in his vehicle. The incident occurred on August 8 at around 1:12 a.m. when Montgomery Township Police spotted a maroon 2005 Ford Taurus with heavily tinted windows traveling along Dekalb Pike.

During the stop near Dekalb Pike and Welsh Road, police noticed the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. When questioned, Wylie, who was driving, admitted to having a marijuana joint in the car’s ashtray but could not produce a medical marijuana card. Upon receiving Wylie’s consent to search the vehicle, police found more than they initially suspected.

In the center console of the car, officers uncovered a small blue bag labeled “305,” adorned with an image of a man in Joker makeup holding a gun. However, it was in the trunk where they found a black backpack containing a loaded 9mm Taurus handgun.

Further complicating Wylie’s situation was the fact that his concealed carry permit had been revoked by the Philadelphia County Sheriff’s Office in December 2023. Wylie admitted to being aware of the revocation but cited his work schedule as the reason he hadn’t appealed the decision.

Adding to his legal troubles, while in custody at the Montgomery Township Police Department, Wylie was observed on surveillance cameras attempting to carve the word “F—” into the bench of his cell. This action led to additional charges of vandalism.

Wylie now faces a series of charges, including felony carrying a firearm without a license, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and vandalism of a prison cell. Despite the severity of these charges, he was released on $25,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on September 10.

Safety Tip: Always ensure that your firearm permits are up-to-date and valid. Carrying a firearm without a valid permit where required is counterproductive for a responsible gun owner.
