Celebrate American Wetlands Month in May

May is American Wetlands Month, and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and its partners are celebrating with a couple of events to engage the public.

American Wetlands Month was created in 1991 by several agencies and partners to celebrate the importance of wetlands to the nation’s ecological, economic and social health and to educate Americans about the value of wetlands as a natural resource.

More wetlands-related events will be scheduled in May. To find them, visit Calendar.OutdoorNebraska.gov.

Wetlands Bike Ride

Explore some of Lincoln’s coolest nature on a wetlands bike ride from Lincoln’s Pioneers Park Nature Center to Wilderness Park.

Join the ride from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 4. Along the way, biologists will discuss the wetlands that are right off the trails.

Registration and helmets are required. Visit the calendar event entry at Calendar.OutdoorNebraska.gov to register.

This free program is being presented in partnership with the City of Lincoln Parks and Recreation. Parking is available at Pioneers Park Nature Center. The ride ends at the northern side of Wilderness Park. Please arrange transportation back to your vehicle.

For questions, contact Ly Graff at [email protected].

Sense of Soil: Wetlands, Art and You

Join us for an evening exploring the hidden world of soil and its vital role in sustaining the life around us at Spring Creek Prairie south of Denton at 5:30 p.m. May 20.

From filtering water to creating iconic prairie views, getting your hands dirty exploring soil sampling, walking a wetland, and painting with soil presented by Nebraska Game and Parks and Natural Resources Conservation Service.

This introductory workshop is intended for ages 17 and up.

Visit the calendar event entry at Calendar.OutdoorNebraska.gov to register.
