I recently attended the NWTF Convention and Sport Show, where I had the opportunity to explore some of the most popular and innovative turkey hunting gear on the market. For first-time turkey hunters, having the right gear is especially important. It not only increases your chances of bagging a bird, but it also ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Every piece of equipment plays a role in maximizing concealment and accuracy.

While there are a ton of top-of-the-line products out there, gearing up for turkey season doesn’t have to break the bank. Many budget-friendly options perform exceptionally well, allowing new hunters to build their collection over time as they gain experience and refine their preferences. Ultimately, turkey hunting is about the chase and calling in a gobbler. Below is the best turkey hunting gear for beginners, based on my years in the woods.

Choosing the right shotgun is one of the most important decisions for a new turkey hunter. A good turkey gun should be consistent, easy to handle, and compatible with specialized turkey chokes and loads.

The Savage Renegauge is an excellent choice for first-time turkey hunters looking for a reliable, affordable, and easy-to-maintain semi-auto shotgun. Available in 12-gauge, it boasts provides smooth operation and recoil management. One of its standout features is its compatibility with a range of choke tubes, allowing hunters to fine-tune their pattern for maximum accuracy. I personally hunt with the Renegauge Turkey, and it’s my go-to shotgun for the upcoming season. Made in the USA, Savage guns are known for their high-quality craftsmanship at a reasonable price. Whether you’re calling in your first gobbler or a seasoned hunter looking for a dependable shotgun, the Renegauge is a top contender.

A quality choke tube is essential for increasing shot accuracy and maximizing pellet density, and the Carlson’s Long Beard XR Turkey is one of the best options for novice hunters. Designed specifically for turkey loads (and dubbed one of the best turkey chokes by our experts), this choke tightens shot patterns, improving effectiveness at longer ranges. It’s also affordable and compatible with multiple shotgun brands, making it a versatile choice for any hunter. I have personally used Carlson’s chokes for the last four years, and they have consistently delivered tight, lethal patterns on my turkey hunts. It’s an easy upgrade to improve your success in the field.

Best Turkey Loads

Selecting the right turkey load is just as important as choosing your shotgun and choke. Modern turkey loads are designed to provide tight patterns, extended distance, and maximum knockdown power. Here’s a breakdown of four excellent options, each offering unique benefits depending on your hunting style and budget.

Winchester Long Beard TSS

  • 6-8X times the number of pellets in a 10″ circle at 60 yards

  • Available on #8 and #9 shot for 12, 20, 28 and .410 gauges

Remington Premier TSS

  • Available in multiple load options 10, 12, and 20 gauges as well as .410 bore, shot sizes #7 or #9

  • Perfect for hunters looking for extended-range capabilities

Hevi-Shot HEVI-18 TSS

  • Features HEVI-Shot’s 18 g/cc tungsten for extreme lethal and tight patterns

  • Smaller #7 shot size means higher pellet count, ensuring dense and lethal patterns

Federal Premium 3rd Degree with Heavyweight TSS

  • Blend payload design: #5 copper-plated lead for close range, #6 FLITESTOPPER lead for mid-range, and #7 TSS for long-range precision

  • Versatile and forgiving, ideal for hunters who may encounter birds at varying distances

A turkey vest is essential, and the Alps OutdoorZ Grand Slam Turkey Vest is built to last, making it a go-to for several seasons. With tons of pockets, a fold-away seat, and a removable kickstand frame, it keeps all your gear organized and within easy reach. Did I mention the seat? If you have turkey hunted for any amount of time where you had to sit, you know how much a nice cushion is worth the money spent. Whether you’re sitting and waiting or chasing gobblers on the run, this vest has you covered.

A good pair of lightweight hunting gloves provide full coverage camo and help cover your skin so you stay hidden. Made from breathable, stretchable fabric, this Mossy Oak pair offers a snug fit while calling or handling your shotgun.

Many turkey hunters are opting for a small chest pack over a full-size turkey vest. This Cabela’s pack allows you to keep minimal gear and stay light on your feet. You’d be surprised at the amount of gear you can fit inside. The main compartment holds binoculars with a magnet-close cover for silent access. It features dedicated pockets for mouth calls, strikers, and locator calls, plus removable side pouches and a box-call holder.

A good pair of turkey hunting boots will keep you dry and comfortable in the woods. Spring is typically rainy season, so having waterproof protection is a must-have. I also like a knee-high style for added protect from ticks when you tuck your pants into the boots. Muck Boot Company has continually produced a quality boot at a more affordable price. The Fieldblazer Classic is one of their most popular styles for hunting. These durable rubber boots are 100% waterproof with a breathable Airmesh lining to for wicking away moisture. Featuring a quick-cleaning sole and a roll-down design, they’re made to handle whatever the hunt throws your way.

The world of turkey calls can be overwhelming (check out our experts’ favorite calls for our top picks this year). However, this Primos turkey calling starter kit is perfect for someone just starting out. It has everything you need for a budget price, including a box call, pot call with striker, and a mouth diaphragm. You’ll be calling in tom turkeys in no time.

Avian-X makes amazing turkey decoys that are both well-built and incredibly realistic. If you don’t want to make a large investment up front, their breeder hen decoy is a great option for getting those toms close. If you don’t mind splurging a bit, adding the Half-Strut Jake should basically seal the deal. Nothing makes an old tom madder than seeing a young jake with a hen. I’ve been using Avian-X decoys for many seasons, and can attest that they are a piece of gear that will be well worth the money spent.

One of my most used pieces of gear when turkey hunting are my binoculars. They provide an edge when looking for birds or trying to strategize a plan from afar. This pair from Bushnell is affordably priced for beginners, yet provide top-level performance, magnification, and clarity. Pro tip: If you want to reduce gear bulk or weight in your vest, opt for a monocular instead—it’ll fit perfectly in a box call pocket.
