HARRODSBURG, KY — A man was fatally shot early Friday morning in what officials say was an apparent home invasion in Harrodsburg.

According to a statement from the Harrodsburg Police Department, officers responded at 5:15 a.m. on February 6 to reports of a shooting at a residence. Upon arrival, they found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers initiated life-saving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene by the Mercer County Coroner’s Office.

Police initially withheld the man’s identity pending notification of next of kin. Later that day, the Mercer County Coroner’s Office confirmed to ABC36 NEWS NOW that the incident began as an apparent home invasion. The deceased and the resident involved were reportedly neighbors in Harrodsburg.

Police described the incident as isolated and said there is no ongoing threat to the public. The case remains under active investigation, and officials say more details will be released as they become available.

In situations like this, understanding the legal framework around self-defense in the home is vital. In Kentucky, residents are generally protected under the state’s “Castle Doctrine,” which permits the use of force, including deadly force, to defend against an unlawful and forcible entry into one’s dwelling. The law presumes a person has a right to defend themselves when confronted with a threat inside their own home.
