SAF Applauds DOJ’s Lawsuit Challenging Long CCW Wait Times In California

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Sept. 30, 2025 — The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) announced support for the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) new lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department challenging the long wait times to receive a concealed carry permit (CCW) in California.

The DOJ’s case follows SAF’s own challenge to the same issue in CRPA v. LASD. SAF and its partners previously won a preliminary injunction in that case, though that injunction was limited to the named plaintiffs in the case only. SAF is joined in CRPA v. LASD by the California Rifle and Pistol Association, Gun Owners of America, Gun Owners Foundation, Gun Owners of California and several individuals.

“This is a landmark lawsuit in that it’s the first time the Department of Justice has ever filed a case in support of gun owners,” said SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut. “We are thrilled to see the federal government step up and defend the Second Amendment rights of citizens and hope this pattern continues around the country.”

As noted in the DOJ’s complaint: “For the approximately 2,768 pending applications for a new license to carry a concealed firearm, interviews are already scheduled for as late as November 2026 — more than two years after some applications were first filed.”

“There is no doubt the DOJ’s lawsuit is a shot across the bow letting everyone know the federal government will not tolerate infringements on the Second Amendment rights of Americans,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “It’s also no surprise this case was filed in California as the state is one of the worst for abusing the constitutional rights of its citizens. SAF has numerous ongoing lawsuits in California, and we will continue to fight to ensure the right to keep and bear arms isn’t relegated to a second-class right.”

The Second Amendment Foundation (saf.org) is the nation’s oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the fundamental rights of individuals enshrined in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. SAF engages in aggressive legal action to ensure the principles of armed self-defense, personal liberty, and the ownership of arms are defended, secured, and restored. Through public education initiatives, SAF teaches the importance of the Second Amendment to promote a society that values and exercises the right to keep and bear arms.
