Review: WieBad Fortune Cookie Shooting Bag

The WieBad DRC (Dissected Range Cube), also known as the “Fortune Cookie” due to its shape resembling the popular, Americanized-Chinese-food after-dinner treats, is a multi-purpose shooting bag. It’s multipurpose in every sense of the word, because once I got my hands on one, I’ve been using it almost every time I shoot rifles. Its crescent “fortune cookie” shape lends itself well as a shooting aid, as the bag can easily be used to support the front of a rifle just like it can its rear. I was inspired to write this review after recently finding another use for the WieBad Dissected Range Cube as a pistol shooting aid when carrying out accuracy evaluations off a bench. Nowadays, shooting bags seem to be everywhere. There’s no doubt that modern precision-rifle style shooting has made them more popular. The purpose of a bag is simple: to bring the marksman as much stability as possible, which means that a bag’s shape and profile matters to your results.

WieBad DRC Overview

The WieBad Dissected Range Cube is a shooting aid made from a sturdy 1000 denier Cordura-nylon fabric that’s treated to be water-resistant. By default, the DRC comes filled with WieBad’s standard polyfill, although customers also have the option to specify for other mediums. The original version of the fortune cookie measures 8x5x7 inches, but as a longstanding product, these shooting bags can be had in different sizes, both smaller or larger and lighter or heavier depending on the shooting task at hand. These bags are stitched shut, so shooters do not need to worry about any zippers or opening becoming undone while subjecting the DRC to strange pressures or contortions. The innermost fold of the crescent also has an additional non-slip material layer to help grip barricade edges, obstacles or rifle fore ends. A standard size “fortune cookie” with polyfill weighs a little over 6 pounds, and WieBad lets its customers pick the style of the cover from a variety of fabric patterns.

Originally, the Dissected Range Cube was one of WieBad’s earliest designs, dating back to 2010, with the premise of being useful as both a front or rear bag for PRS style shooting. To this day, it continues to be one of WieBad’s flagship products.

Shooting With Fortune Cookies

Pistol on bagThe crescent shape is what gives this WieBad bag its high degree of flexibility. For example, a shooter can place the Dissected Range Cube’s void over the edge of any barricade to provide bag stability while shooting. But, when shooting off a bench, shooters can use crescent shape to cradle rifle fore-ends for support the way they might use an “H” or “X” bag to support their fore-ends. Its shape is truly indispensable I’ve used it the bag as advertised—both on the front and rear of a rifle, or anywhere else in between where it makes sense. The DRC is well made and sturdy enough that I found it to be quite stable for shooting most pistols from rest with it—something that’s not as straightforward to do with other shooting bags. With handguns, both the give of the fabric and properties of the fill allow a handgun’s frame to meld with the surface and become quite stable.

The Takeaway

The crescent shape of this bag makes it a “jack-of-all trades” shooting accessory. Besides cradling things like the edge of a barricade or rifle fore-ends, the fortune cookie can be rolled over or folded as needed to provide bag support at odd angles. Due to the size and weight, the original might not be the best choice for shooting situations where ounces and pounds matter, but for a general-purpose shooting bag, it’s hard to beat. MSRP for the standard size WieBad DRC Fortune Cookie shooting bag is $79.99, and more information is available at wiebadgear.com.
