First Look: Luth-AR Chrome Slick Side Bolt Carrier Group

Luth-AR has recently unveiled a new retro-styled, fully chromed slick-side AR-15 pattern BCG (bolt carrier group). The entire assembly is hard chromed and works both as a finish that protects bare metal while also adding a degree of lubricity. This is important, as the BCG performs one of the most important jobs inside the AR-15: loading, locking into place, firing and extracting the ammunition. Most AR-15 pattern BCGs have bolt carriers that have a series of notches in a straight line on the right side of the carrier. These notches exist so that the tip of the forward assist has something to “bite” into in order to help send the bolt home. While the necessity of a forward assist on an AR-15 is something that has been up for debate for years.

This new bolt carrier group completely removes these forward assist notches and has a cleaner, slick-sided appearance that is meant to be used in AR-15s that also skip the entire forward assist assembly. Fully chromed and slick-side bolt carrier groups were very common in the earliest Colt AR-15s, hence the retro label. These days, retro AR-15 builds have become extremely popular, and Luth-AR wanted to offer a product that caters to this market. Retro or not, the Luth AR chromed bolt carrier group will work with any standard pattern AR-15 upper receiver that’s chambered for .223 Rem. / 5.56 NATO. This retro-styled carrier is built to the traditional US Army specifications from 8620 steel and includes chrome-lining in the interior where the bolt nests into the bolt carrier. The bolt itself is machined from Carpenter 158 steel, which has always been the traditional steel for this application.

The retail pricing for the Luth-AR Complete Chrome Slick-Slide Bolt Carrier starts at $189.99. To learn more about this new AR-15 BCG or other AR-15 parts and accessories sold by Luth-AR, visit luth-ar.com.
