Walgreens Theft Turns Deadly: Armed Suspect Shot By Concealed Carry Holder

A concealed carry holder shot an armed theft suspect during a Walgreens theft in Calumet City, Illinois. The suspect fled the scene but later died from his injuries. Police are currently investigating the incident.

CALUMET CITY, IL (2-minute read) — In the early hours of October 6, 2024, police responded to a retail theft at a Walgreens located in the 500 block of Torrence Avenue in Calumet City. At around 2:10 AM, while en route to the scene, officers received an additional report of gunfire and a vehicle fleeing the area westbound.

Officers tracked down the vehicle in the 1600 block of Sibley, where they found a 42-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Police administered first aid before transporting him to a local trauma center, where he later died from his injuries.

According to the preliminary investigation, the man and a 48-year-old woman exited Walgreens without paying for merchandise. The woman fled on foot after employees recovered the stolen items from her. When the 42-year-old man was confronted, he drew a handgun. A store employee, who holds a valid concealed carry license, responded by firing his firearm, hitting the man. The wounded suspect then drove away from the scene but was later located by police.

Concealed Carry and Self-Defense Considerations

Illinois allows for concealed carry, and this incident highlights the importance of concealed carry holders knowing when to responsibly use their firearm in self-defense. The situation escalated when the armed suspect posed a direct threat to store employees. It’s essential for concealed carriers to understand not only the legal grounds for self-defense but also the responsibility that comes with carrying a firearm, particularly in public spaces.

Safety Tip: Always ensure your concealed carry training includes situational awareness and de-escalation techniques. Responsible use of a firearm should always be the last resort in self-defense.
