UnitedHealthcare CEO Shot, Killed In NYC Shooting

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in Midtown Manhattan near the New York Hilton hotel in what police believe was a targeted attack. Authorities are actively investigating, offering a $10,000 reward for leads.

NEW YORK, NY (1-minute read) — UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was tragically shot and killed early Wednesday morning near the New York Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The incident occurred at approximately 6:40 a.m. on West 54th Street, just steps from the hotel’s entrance.

Authorities believe this was a targeted attack, as Thompson’s schedule was well known due to his attendance at an investor conference scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Witnesses report that the shooter appeared to know precisely which door Thompson would use, ambushing him at point-blank range.

The gunman, described as a tall man wearing all black and a ski mask, fled through Ziegfeld Alleyway before escaping on a bicycle. Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the area, and a $10,000 reward has been announced for information leading to an arrest.

A driver who witnessed the scene, Amar Abdelmula, described hearing a muffled gunshot and seeing the suspect flee. “I was shocked. First time I saw crime in front of me. I was afraid he’d shoot me too, my car, I saw everything.” Abdelmula said.

Brian Thompson, a Minnesota native and valedictorian of the University of Iowa Class of 1997, had served as UnitedHealthcare CEO since 2021. Under his leadership, the company maintained its status as the largest health insurer globally. The conference, intended for the company’s investors, was cancelled following the tragedy.

Safety Tip: Stay vigilant about your surroundings, especially in urban areas. If you witness a crime, prioritize your safety and alert authorities immediately.
